Little Caesar by Tommy Wieringa.
Description found on DutchNews:
"Ludwig Unter, the child of artists, is born to a Austrian father and a Dutch mother in Alexandria, Egypt. His nickname is Caesarion, or little Caesar, the name of the child born to Julius Caesar and Cleopatra. His father leaves the family when Unter is young and eventually he and his mother move to live with relatives in the Dutch countryside, before his mother moves them to a house on a cliff in England, which eventually falls into the sea. Though he’s aware of his father’s fame (the man once blew up a mountain in South America as an art installation), it is while living in England that he learns of his mother’s chosen profession: porn actress."
The main character spent part of his childhood in Egypt, but he and his mother, whose name might have been Lilian or something like that, later moved to a city, I think in Europe, maybe London. The father is absent throughout, or at least as far as I got. Sometime in the first few pages of the book (I think), when he's an adult, he's playing in a bar or restaurant or similar venue and a patron gets angry at him because he doesn't know any songs from My Fair Lady. Later, someone expresses awe at how much he earns for playing, possibly a friend of his.
At the age of sixteen or seventeen, he finds out that his mother was an adult actress while watching a film with a friend. His mother stopped when she fell in love with a man, probably the piano player's father.
The director or someone his mother worked with would have rather lost her to death than to love.
I think that it was the author's first book or first work to be translated into English.
