If the lack of response or energy on the High Wind in Jamaica thread is due to the fact people didn't get a chance to suggest their own titles, then let's start up the old tradition sooner rather than later.

I was thinking that since it's already October (what on earth happened to September) we could give another two weeks for A High Wind in Jamaica and start this next book in the middle of October. What do folks think? Then the book could run through November, with a new selection for December.

Sorry about my own lack of participation. I have the excuse that I had surgery and, well, that's where my September went.

List here what books you'd be interested in voting for October and whether you want it to run into November.

Thanks!

Jonathan | 232 comments Ouch! I hope everything's ok now Trevor.

The mid-October start suits me if people want more time to read 'High Wind'.

I'd like to propose Wish Her Safe at Home by Stephen Benatar as I've heard great things about it.

Thanks for the well wishes! Yes, I'm back to 100% now!

Lois (literanarchy) | 113 comments I'd really like to read the new Simone Weil, On the Abolition of All Political Parties - sounds interesting! And obviously I would vote for a delayed start running through November too.

Guy | 144 comments Wish Her Safe at Home is fantastic. Think Blanche Du Bois.
Glad you had a speedy recover, Trevor.

Alexander Lesher (lordedge) | 12 comments Can we read something spoooooky for it is October? I am finally able to really participate, too.

The new Simone Weil is about 75 pages of rather large font size. Perhaps we can do that as a side read?

As for spooky titles, I'd recommend The Other. I also like doing spooky in October.

Just looked at my copy of the new Weil. The actual essay is only 35 pages (again, with relatively large script), but is followed by two more essays, one by Czeslaw Milosz and one by Simon Leys, rounding the book out at 71 pages. I'm happy to put it on the list of titles to vote for. We'd certainly be able to get through it :-) .

Alexander Lesher (lordedge) | 12 comments I am all about the Tryon book!

The Weil would be interesting too, but is so short, it seems like an additional discussion piece.

A couple of years ago, I bought A Time of Gifts for my husband, along with books 2 and , more recently, book 3 of the trilogy. My husband and I are keen travelers and he's been urging me to read it -- he loved the whole series.Reading it as a monthly selection would get me into it. PLF I was an immensely fascinating writer and personality, so I, too, vote for this book

Lois (literanarchy) | 113 comments I didn't realise the Simone Weil was so short - that probably makes it a bit unsuitable for a monthly read. Perhaps a side-read instead? I would still like to read The Enchanted April also.

Let me know if I'm missing any from above:

-Wish Her Safe at Home
-A Time of Gifts
-The Other
-The Enchanted April

Does that sound like a good list for a poll on the next read? I will make the poll tomorrow, so let me know if you have other thoughts in the next bit.
