jaewolff | 5 comments YA book from the sixties. 2 sisters, 1 very cool, one not. Social climbing mother. First line is "They divided their room with a string" Very early sixties vibe, beginings of Youthquake. I want to find this book!

Nidofito | 42 comments Most probably wrong but maybe The Drowning House by Elizabeth Black? It has two sisters. The older sister was considered the cool/smart/popular one while the younger one, the protagonist, was always regarded as weird. They had separated their room by a string. Only problem is the book was published in 2013 and it's not YA.

Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments Who Wants Music on Monday?? According to this link (view spoiler) the first few lines are: "They'd divided their room with string, even making a narrow hall so that Cassie, in getting to her side, wouldn't step in Lotta's side, which had the door..."

Jaewolff--do you mean that the book was PUBLISHED in the 60's? Or that it was set in the 60's? Can you remember anything about the cover? Where did you get the book from? How did you find it?

jaewolff | 5 comments Book was published in the 60's because I read it in in junior high. Probably 1963-1964. Amazing how a book can stay with one that long, considering I have not read it since then.

I think Kate got it - that's a book from the 60s with exactly the phrase jaewolff is looking for. Actually I found it as well yesterday but didn't post once I saw Kate had posted. My googling immediately brought up this Kirkus review:
