Susan R. | 5 comments I think this might be one of my new favorites. I loved creepy stories as a kid and this brought back those feelings. Every detail adds to the ominous and threatening atmosphere of the book. The bath tub scene will stick with me for a very long time. I had listened to it previously and I could hear his voice telling the story as I read.

Susan | 4 comments I liked Gaiman's writing, but I did not make it all the way through the book. It was good and at another point in my life I definitely would have finished it, but it was a little too much right now. It really has some nightmarish qualities, with the boy having to be strong against not just regular adults (his father) but against a monster too. I got as far as him reaching the Hempstock's farm (safety) and felt comfortable stopping.

Susan | 4 comments Same here and with DVD's too! I was traumatized when a dog died in a movie, even though it was just from old age, and I haven't seen a dog movie since!

Happy endings dog books I have read: "The Hundred and One Dalmatians" by Dodie Smith and "The Incredible Journey" by Sheila Every Burnford.

I love that he thanked them at the end of the book for always being there when he needed them or something to that effect. I don't have book in front of me so the quote might not be 100% accurate. It makes me hope he will tell more of their story one day.

Susan R. | 5 comments After listening to Racing the Rain on my commute to work (weeping and driving do not mix), I decided no more stories where the pet dies or where the owner dies and the pet mourns.
