I think this might be one of my new favorites. I loved creepy stories as a kid and this brought back those feelings. Every detail adds to the ominous and threatening atmosphere of the book. The bath tub scene will stick with me for a very long time. I had listened to it previously and I could hear his voice telling the story as I read.

I liked Gaiman's writing, but I did not make it all the way through the book. It was good and at another point in my life I definitely would have finished it, but it was a little too much right now. It really has some nightmarish qualities, with the boy having to be strong against not just regular adults (his father) but against a monster too. I got as far as him reaching the Hempstock's farm (safety) and felt comfortable stopping.
Same here and with DVD's too! I was traumatized when a dog died in a movie, even though it was just from old age, and I haven't seen a dog movie since!Happy endings dog books I have read: "The Hundred and One Dalmatians" by Dodie Smith and "The Incredible Journey" by Sheila Every Burnford.
Karin wrote: "I really want to know more about the Hempstocks and their legacy. I wonder if this important information is just waiting to burst out of Neil Gaiman's head?"I love that he thanked them at the end of the book for always being there when he needed them or something to that effect. I don't have book in front of me so the quote might not be 100% accurate. It makes me hope he will tell more of their story one day.
