Yesterday, in setting up my new PC, I went to download a manager, finding only the information that if I were running PC, I could use Windows Media Player (WMP) and for Mac one would use iTunes. I downloaded a short book in format 4 to see what would happen ... the file went straight to my Downloads folder, and when I launched WMP, the book appeared as usual. I transferred it to my Cowon D2 as a test, where it played back without a hitch, and the cover art displayed correctly (rather than a blank gray or black box).

Hmm. Can you download direct from itunes on Windows? I don't even have Windows Media player installed. I find it more than somewhat annoying.
I thought one could use iTunes with PC? I've never thought to try. I might've missed a Manager download prompt, but I don't think so, and it has been quite buggy, so would make sense if Audible has just withdrawn the option altogether.

I'm not even sure how you'd do it. Like associate the aiduble download link with itunes maybe?
The Audible book downloads to your Download folder, not some far-flung corner of one's hard drive ('Audible-land') as before. So, I suspect iTunes would either automatically sweep your Downloads folder (as WMP seemed to do for me), or you might have to tell iTunes to start looking there in future?
I just got a new PC about a month ago, and I downloaded the Audible manager that I had on the last computer. It always tells me I have to have iTunes installed. I've downloaded a few books, and they went to Documents - Audible - Downloads. They didn't automatically go into iTunes like they used to. I just have to add them manually from iTunes. Not sure if there's a setting to get them to do that or not. Here's the link for the Audible manager if that is what you're looking for.https://www.audible.com/sw
