How often do you read out of your comfort zone? Also, what is your comfort zone?

message 2: by Acheron (new)

Acheron arnold | 5 comments Not often. my comfort zone is pretty much everything but historical and realistic fiction

message 3: by Colleen Marie (new)

Colleen Marie Zukowski (clevergirlfromgallifrey) I have to admit, probably never. I will read everything with the exception of romance. Have just never been big on anything romance.

message 4: by Purvika (new)

Purvika (violetstygian) | 3067 comments I have a vast zone or comfort :P , well except for horror that is !

And I have never ever stepped out if my comfort zone.... Yeah I have read one or two ghost type of books but not that bone chilling , nightmarish kind of scary books...

So I don't think I will ever read out of my comfort zone....

message 5: by Satu (new)

Satu (sadun) | 68 comments Not often. I get bored, irritated and/or angry, and toss the book aside. Or read it and promise myself never to do that again. Charlotte Gray was "one of those books". I gave it 2 stars because I finished it and regarded that as a win. 50 Shades of Gray would most likely get burned in the fireplace.

And just like you Colleen ~ The Clever Girl from Gallifrey, I've never been big on romance.

message 6: by Aubrey Pols (new)

Aubrey Pols (apols) Rarely. My comfort zone has always been fantasy. I need books that could sustain my child-like self so that's why most of my collections are fantasy books like HP and PJ. But just this year, I read TFIOS as well as Thirteen Reasons Why.

Moreover, Im not really fond of reading love stories/romance but I managed to read two romance/erotic books but of course with a twist of fantasy

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't think I really have a "comfort zone". I love any and all genres, and switch it up every couple months or so.

message 8: by Seema (new)

Seema Dubey (seemadubey) | 11 comments Fiction/ Non Fiction is indeed my comfort zone- the entire spectrum, only requirement I have is that it should be well written/ hold one's attention-which goes for any genre I read. I also do read a lot of management books. Reading out of my comfort zone would be reading a 'Twilight' kindda book! Not happening!

message 9: by Chetana (new)

Chetana Kamath (chetanakamath9) I don't have a comfort zone as such. But I don't particularly enjoy thrillers & crime based novels. This year I read Murder on the orient express by Agatha Christie. Well.. though I enjoyed it, I might not read such books in future. Reading about crimes gives me creeps!

message 10: by IShita (new)

IShita | 1528 comments Not really, if ever. My favorites are classics and crime/mystery/thrillers but I can never stand a Fantasy. Never could, never will!

message 11: by RachelvlehcaR (new)

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) There are certain genres I will not touch. Religious and chic lit. I'm not fond of Westerns and books like Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey, or the extremely boring like North and South.

message 12: by Abeer Reviews (new)

Abeer Reviews (beeribou) | 1 comments My comfort zone is historical, romance, adventure fiction.
But sometimes, and by sometimes I mean, maybe 4 times a year, I go out of my comfort zone and read a science fiction or philosophical book.
It's not that rare, I like my comfort zone, but sometimes leaving it can be pretty exciting!!

message 13: by Dominique (new)

Dominique I mostly read thrillers and mysteries but I've been branching out little by little into Fantasy

message 14: by Tricia (last edited Oct 22, 2014 09:58AM) (new)

Tricia (Dreamweavrr) | 4 comments No comfort zone here. I love all genres !
I'm more picky about the writing of a story. It needs to flow, have good wording and come together nicely.

message 15: by Rick (new)

Rick Scott Not very often. I like HF and stories about life

message 16: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) Nowadays , very often.
my comfort zones-cozy mystery , psychological thrillers . contemporary

message 17: by Maddie (new)

Maddie (maddiewclay) I enjoy reading out of my comfort zone because it opens my eyes to amazing genres that I wouldn't have ever tried

message 18: by Indu (new)

Indu (indupramod) | 42 comments Hmmm...Comfort zone...I never thought about it...anything other than philosophical can come under my comfort zone...Also I don't read much of non-fiction.. Other than that I'm open to all genres..atleast I'll try exploring out of my comfort zone.. :)

message 19: by Evangeline (new)

Evangeline | 34 comments My comfort zone really varies but I tend to avoid historical and horror books, unless they've been highly recommended. I find historical books either to depressing or just plain confusing and I find horror books... actually I think that I just haven't found the right horror book ye.

message 20: by Raquel (new)

Raquel Romero (raqueljeannie) | 17 comments I never used to have a comfort zone but once I started reading more adult fiction a few years ago I'm kind of more hesitant to read any young adult books. But I try to sometimes because of course they're still good books.
I don't like books that are just romance, I need it to be weird and crazy, or anything but just romance.

message 21: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 241 comments I'm up for almost anything in the book-world, but I draw a firm line at erotica. I do NOT read erotica...it just FEELS awkward and wrong to me, on many levels.

More specifically, let's see...I'd say I haven't outgrown all YA books yet. I don't much care for romantic "IreallylikeBradbutOMGthecutestguyinschooljustaskedmeout...OMGOMG!!" type stuff anymore, (Ugh, "The Unwritten Rule" by Elizabeth Scott was the worst! (No judgment on the author intended.) That was the point I realized I had outgrown high school relationship YA, for sure.) but I still love realistic YA fiction, contemporary YA, and most dystopian fiction.

I'd say most of Stephen King's work is out of my comfort zone...I don't venture into horror very often ('cause I'm a scaredy cat - although I find I'm not usually disturbed by scary books...) but I do find it interesting. I really want to get up my nerve, and read "Carrie" and "Pet Semetary" actually, now that I think about it.

Sorry, this is turning into an essay.
To recap:
My comfort zone: FICTION; including: dystopian YA, contemporary YA, realistic YA, adult contemporary (to a certain extent), adult realistic fiction, psychological thrillers/mystery/crime thriller, fantasy (to a certain extent), autobiographies, psychological character studies.

Genres out of my comfort zone: most NONFICTION, books about drugs, or which feature characters doing drugs, ("CRANK" by Ellen Hopkins scared me half to death!) sports fiction, hardcore crime fiction (I don't care to read about serial killers or rapists, or anything like that), romantic adult fiction, Westerns, preachy religious books.

I know that's an extensive list, but I'm not really as picky as it makes me out to be! As long as I reserve the right to put something down, I'll pretty much try almost anything.

And I do venture out of my comfort zone quite frequently actually - my dad NEVER reads YA anything, (he's very particular) so all he passes on to me are adult books - and that's where most of my exposure to adult fiction comes from.

message 22: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (anovelglimpse) Not very often. It's usually a book group or a book I've heard was good so I force myself. Reading is supposed to be about enjoyment, so I hate wasting time on books I really have no fun with.

message 23: by Nina (new)

Nina (niisku80) I have been expanding my comfort zone lately so I can see I have steped out of my comfort zone but I still keep to my newly found comfort zone. I openminded to all categories of books but Fantasy and Horror is a definite NO for me. I usually keep my self to crime books, historical books and chick-lit.

I'm with Deanne on "Reading is supposed to be about enjoyment, so I hate wasting time on books I really have no fun with".

message 24: by Jeanna (new)

Jeanna Roberts | 35 comments To tell u the truth, my comfort zone is pretu much NONEXISTENT when it cones to books. I can read almost any genre, and not judge based on what type of book it is. I dont discriminate against ANY type of writting style, because they are all meant to be enjoyed by someone, somewhere.
However, the last few weeks I have really dove into YA and Dystopian themed books.

message 25: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 241 comments Nina wrote: "I have been expanding my comfort zone lately so I can see I have steped out of my comfort zone but I still keep to my newly found comfort zone. I openminded to all categories of books but Fantasy a..."

I definitely agree with both of you, as far as "reading is about enjoyment" goes! Read what you like. Period. :)

message 26: by Kylie (new)

Kylie | 15 comments I am not a fan of romance, but I read the Bridges of Madison County, and Dear John, and actually enjoyed them.

message 27: by fureshiiness (new)

fureshiiness | 194 comments Very often. I tend to wander out of my comfort zone when I've read too much of one genre in succession. When I've read too much fantasy, I look for something opposite to read, like mystery/thriller.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Goodreads is really what started helping me read outside of my comfort zone. Before, I mostly read classics and nonfiction, and scorned a lot of genre books. Even though I still don't particularly like romances, etc., some books have definitely been worth branching out.

message 29: by Chelle𓆏 (new)

Chelle𓆏 | 136 comments It's happened pretty often where I had to push myself to read through a book either because it was boring or the character(s) were annoying me.

message 30: by BeeXWitch (new)

BeeXWitch My comfort zone is in YA and its romance, slice of life, supernatural, fantasy and historic. Every once in a while I read an adult book and rarely is it scifi. If I like how it is written and the characters enough I will read out of my comfort zone but it doesn't happen alot.

message 31: by Jojobean (new)

Jojobean My comfort zone is YA and I rarely read out of it unless my sister or mom recommends a book to me

message 32: by Akhil teja (new)

Akhil teja (akhilsayaawesomeeeeee) My comfort zone is Fantasy-Adventure..

I often try to read Dark-Grey types.. I like the G R R Marin way.. There is never going to be all good guys groups up and faces a bad guy..

message 33: by Michael (new)

Michael (micky74007) I read almost anything, although I find YA not to be my cup of tea. My comfort zone is mysteries and lately, cozy mysteries. But I like romances and books set around Christmas, too.

message 34: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Johnson (michellecurates) I dont have a comfort zone, I guess, because I will read just about anything.

I dont really care for romance, but I did just read one that I loved.

I cant say I've read much in the way of erotica, as someone above said. I cant imagine purchasing a book in that genre.

I dont love horror, but I do read a lot of King and Koontz.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I pretty much will read just about anything so long as it's the storyline is something I will enjoy, i'm not picking when it comes to books

message 36: by Gayatri (new)

Gayatri | 31 comments Honestly I don't think I have found a book which is out of my comfort zone. I'm not picky when it comes to books. The only genre which might be out of my comfort zone is horror and maybe LGBT

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I try to read most things, so I don't have much of a comfort zone when it comes to fiction.

message 38: by Crystal (new)

Crystal I have a wide comfort zone.I love romance(long as the love scenes aren't too graphic) historical fiction, chick lit, some literary classics, the scarlet letter, jane eyre, and the like I've read a few stephen king so that's not a problem. I won;'t read anything overly sexual or gory. long as I don't have to do either of those I'm okay.

message 39: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 48 comments My comfort zone is pretty darn big! I read outside it now a lot more often that I'm doing different GR challenges. I'm not comfortable with overt horror, gore or porn. I don't really care for war or depressing stories & am not really fond of biography/autobiography or too much non-fiction.

message 40: by Emma (new)

Emma (e_loves_writing) | 133 comments Not often I have a pretty normal comfort zone I would say I like everything except horror.
