Ok... First of all don't be sorry... Your reply was accurate.... I felt exactly the same things....

And as far as your questions goes here is what I think !

1. Natan was what we call male chauvinistic pig. Sorry but he annoyed me. He wanted everything his way. His narcissistic behavior was intolerable and damn sigga was just 15. Freaking pervert he was.

2. I think Lauga always wanted everyone's attention and she couldn't bear when Agnes got it even if it was in a bad way. But by the end she must have felt something towards Agnes that is why she relentlessly gave up her brooch.

3. You know I think their conversation was inevitable. After the absence of Toti, Agnes needed someone to talk to. I think when Margaret realized she is dying, that feeling brought closure between both women. She could then feel the fear and despair, the feelings Agnes was suppressing also going through. That one statement tell us how Agnes wanted her to feel what she was feeling.

4. Trust is a big word. Understanding we could use. One cannot truly trust someone capable of murder. But yeah they grew fond of her despite their reservations and the sudden news of her execution date created havoc among their own thoughts. They became accustomed to her presence. The in fact were at one point dependent on her. She was the extra pair of hands they needed so gravely and as they came to know her by her actions they got attached to her even when they wanted nothing to do with her.

Petur's death ...well he was at the wrong place at the wrong time... He was slaughtered because fridrik thought he was Natan. He did not plan to murder him.

Writing was very beautiful. With all the metaphors and similes. It is something I can relate to. I love metaphorical lines. And names...well I gave them my own pronunciations as per my convenience xD

About Agnes story .. Truth to be told...I hadn't read her story before reading this book. But after reading this one...I did some research and found out she was portrayed as a evil person. I do not know which Agnes is real Agnes but even the Agnes of burial rites gave me shivers. Even though it was not her hand that started it but it was her hand who ended it. I was shocked when I read how she mentioned that one she started plunging knife ...she just couldn't stop her hand again and again. I in fact read it more than thrice to verify the horror I was reading and how after that she rubbed the wall with fat. Making it easier to burn. It horrified me. I had hoped she had minimal hand in murder but after reading those lines the painting I had painted of Agnes in my mind lost all its colors.

I agree about Mercy killing ... I too was shocked as I wanted her to be innocent ...what shocked me was how she killed him. She could have stopped at one plunge. But she kept doing it again and again. Like a madness came over her. That was what that changed my views of her.

One line confused me... After reading it again Noe... I think she did it one time...

"I couldn't have stopped if I'd wanted to"

I think I drew my own conclusion reading this line...but now that you wrote it and I again reread it.... Maybe it was one time. ??

Yeah she tried to cover it up. Maybe she herself drew the conclusion that he wanted her to kill him...maybe he wanted to be saved...asking something from his lab after all he was a medical person. She could have gone straight to authority and confessed...instead of burning the whole house.

I do agree but she rubbed the damn house with whale fat. Even though he wronged her, even though he cheated her, she loved him and how did she think burning a house will save her ? How could she cover killing the one she loved when it was done as an act of mercy and not hatred.

I think it was sigga's confession and Blondals' fondness of Natan that drove Agnes to death. In one chapter where Blondal is talking with Toti he says :

" She told me everything. How Agnes hated Natan, how Agnes was jealous of his attentions to her. Sigga is not bright, but she saw that much.’"


Blöndal shrugged. ‘Who said he promised her anything? As far as I can see, Agnes was under the impression that she had successfully seduced him. But Sigga testified that Natan preferred her . . . attentions.’"

These are the lines of a girl who wanted to marry another man. I think it was actually Sigga that drove fridrik mad that led to brutal murder

All the time those burst of crying. All the time pretending she cared for Agnes. I think she played all three of them. Natan, Agnes and Fridrik.
