A couple of things to keep in mind:
✸ Communication is key. Please make sure to check in regularly with your team.
✸ Let your team know if it looks like you won't get your review posted by Wednesday/Saturday, 11:59pm. You do have all of Thursday/Sunday to submit your review, but it can be intensely frustrating for your captain if they don't know when or if they can expect your review before the deadline.
✸ If you know beforehand that you won't be able to read and review a book during a certain period of time, you can request a pre-arranged absence from me, either by posting the request in the discussion thread or by sending me a pm. The request has to be submitted before the team rolls for the time period in question, can only be approved by me as the mod in charge of running the game, and has to state a reason for the absence. (Reasons for pre-arranged absences can include e.g. going on vacation or work trips, planned hospital stays, exam period, etc.)
✸ If you do not have a pre-arranged absence and won't be able to finish your book in time for an unforeseen reason, please let your team know as soon as possible. If the team has earned the free pass, it can be used to cover the missing review. Without a free pass, the team has to sit out the next roll.
✸ We all know that real life gets in the way sometimes, be it through family emergencies, work emergencies, natural disasters, technical problems making it impossible to get online, or in other ways. That being said, please do keep in mind that this is a team challenge and your team relies on you to do your part unless an emergency occurs.
✸ If you find that the pressure of keeping up with the pace of the game gets too much for you or you wish to stop playing for any other reason, you can drop out of the challenge at any time. In that case, please let your team captain and/or me know that you wish to drop out rather than just disappearing without a word so your team won't be penalized when you fail to turn in your review. Thank you!
Captain's Handbook
✸ The team's captain is its chief organizer. This includes rolling the dice, posting the team's new spot to the team thread and the Post Your Spot thread, collecting links to team members' review posts in a single post to be linked in the Post Your Spot thread, doublechecking that books and review posts comply with requirements, reminding team members to post their reviews in time if necessary, etc.
✸ The captain may delegate some tasks, such as rolling and posting the new spot to the team thread, to another team member if they so choose. (Either a designated roller who fulfills this role for every roll, or whichever team member is online first once rolling is possible.) Collecting reviews into a single post and posting to the Post Your Spot thread should always be handled by the captain.
✸ Instead of having everything handled by a single team captain, teams can also choose two co-captains to handle the workload.
✸ Selection posts are not strictly required by the game's rules and I won't be checking for them. It's up to the team captain to decide whether they want them.
✸ If the team captain requests a pre-arranged absence, it's their responsibility to arrange for another team member to step in as temporary captain.
✸ The team captain is my primary point of contact for the team and should allow receiving private messages.

Great names - my favorite is Speedy Novelites.
I'm trying to also think of names - the only one I can come up with is:
Fast Fourwards

Donna, thanks for being willing to be captain.
Speedy Novelites works for me, but I also like the play on our group number with Fast Fourwards!

I love this challenge because it keeps me on track with my reading. I have a tendency to get distracted by TV and games, so I don't always read as much as I would like to. This challenge keeps me focused on reading.

I hope you're feeling better Suzanne!!!

I've played the regular SS version before, but not the SSS - I think the only difference is reading two books a week instead of one, right?

Yes, the days we are rolling are Thursdays and Sundays. Don't forget how important that free pass can be. Last round, my team had to sit out a week because a member didn't finish their book on time and we didn't have that free pass.

So have we decided on a team name? Sandy & Theo, are you two voting for Speedy Novelites or Fast Fourwards?

And yep, Donna - I was on a team with the same situation last round as well.
**I just went back and looked and we were on the same team. It was so frustrating, wasn't it?
Yep, it was frustrating because we all just wanted to play and we had to wait. I love this challenge as I get to read more of the series that I started during all of my other challenges. It is nice to go back and revisit the worlds and characters that I enjoyed so much.

Book: Kissing Coffins by Ellen Schreiber
Qualification: book 2 in Vampire Kisses series
Date:8/29/19
Rating:3 star
Review:
I enjoyed this sequel to Vampire Kisses. However, I did waver between rating it 3 or 4 stars. I liked the story itself but one character really annoyed me. Trevor just gets worse. You would think he would learn something from what happened in book 1. He learned absolutely nothing and became even more stalker like. Parents and principals would (I hope) do something about a teen that is stalking and harassing a girl publicly. Everyone sees it, so why is nothing done? He isn't even the villain in this book but he is so awful that he takes some of the spotlight from the real villain. I really hope he isn't focused on as much in book 3. I do love the sassy attitude that Raven has. She isn't some weak and whiny heroine. Instead, she is strong and stands up for the people she cares about. Book 3 will determine whether or not I continue this series.

Barefoot in Lace by Roxanne St. Claire
Qualification: Book 2 in Barefoot Bay Brides series
Date: 8/29/19
Rating: 4
Review: TJ DeMille is a world renown fashion photographer who is in Barefoot Bay after his sister died and he's been chosen as his 12-year-old niece's guardian. Tom lives his life on the road and prefers to be alone - he has no idea what do with a young ward! Gussie McBain is a wedding stylist and is surprised to run into TJ on her small island. When she is unexpectedly in need of a wedding photographer, she decides to ask Tom, even though, as she thinks in the story "it's like asking Picasso to do a paint-by-numbers painting." Tom agrees if Gussie is willing to help him with his niece, Alex. Both Tom and Gussie have scars, some physical and some emotional, that they don't talk about to anyone. Except when they start to reveal things to each other. When Tom gets a lucrative photography assignment in Nice, France, he gets Gussie and Alex to accompany him and lots of things change. I enjoyed this book, especially when they were in France! This is the first book in this series I've read and it can easily be a standalone. I listened to the audio version, and I'm kind-of on the fence about the narrator - she did some characters great, but other times she seemed a little over the top with her enthusiasm.

Book: Little Altars Everywhere by Rebecca Wells
Qualification: Ya Yas #2
Finished: 8/31/19
Rating: 3 stars
Review: Listed on Goodreads as Ya Yas #2, this book was actually written before it's more popular companion, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. It explores the Walker family and is told in vignettes from the points of view of the parents (Vivi of Ya-Ya fame and Big Shep), as well as their children (Siddalee, Little Shep, Baylor, and Lulu) and "the help" (Willetta and Chaney). The first part covers stories from the 1960s, when the children were just that, while the second part brings the stories into the 1990s. It's more of a series of short stories than a novel with a specific flow, but it does give more insight into the family relationships that impact Divine Secrets. The writing was engaging, but nothing extraordinary.

Book: Slouch Witch by Helen Harper
Qualification: Moon on Cover
Finished: 9/1/2019
Rating: *****
Review: This was a cute book! It was very snarky and the plot was really good. The only complaint I have is that the book uses words like Crisps and Lifts but no one had an english accent in the audio version...

Book: The Gender Fall by Bella Forrest
Qualification: #5 in the Gender Game series
Date:9/2/19
Rating:4 star
Review:
I love this series! The characters are great and each book takes the craziness to the next level. Poor Violet didn't get much action in this book as she was too injured to do much. Owen surprised me a bit. I am curious whether he is still on the right side or not. I would have liked to know what the results of the video were but I guess I have to read the next book to find out. I definitely will be reading that book soon.

Anything for You by Kristan Higgins
Pages: 410
Qualification: Blue Heron #5
Completed: 9/2/19
Rating: 3 stars
Review: This book was okay for me. Jessica Dunn grew up with alcoholic parents and a disabled brother who she now cares for. She's been able to sort-of escape her past, well as much as you can in a small town, but is doing well for herself and her brother, Davey. Connor O'Rourke runs a restaurant in town, and has been secretly dating Jessica off and on for years. He's tired of them having to keep things a secret because Jessica's brother doesn't like him, and he wants something more permanent. But Jessica is reluctant to let go of her heart. I felt bad for all the things Jessica had to endure over the years, and her attitude was somewhat understandable, but she could be pretty bitchy sometimes and her unwillingness to move on from some of the stuff grew a bit tedious. This was the first book in the series I've read - I'm not sure if I'll continue on or not.

Book: The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye by David Lagercrantz
Qualification: Millennium #5
Finished: 9/4/19
Rating: 4 stars
Review: As with the last installment, Lagercrantz lacks the depth of storytelling that made Stieg Larsson's original Millennium trilogy such a compelling read. He does, however, know how to pack in a lot of storylines and action, and he takes readers on a journey through Lisbeth Salander's past and present, while also telling the tales of a Bangladeshi woman imprisoned for the murder of her brother and a psycho-social experiment looking into nature v. nurture (that is tied to Lisbeth's past). Of course, Mikael Blomkvist is there to help with his charm and journalistic know-how, and other old favorites are around as well. A solid thriller, but unable to live up to its predecessors.

That looks like a fun book, Suzanne! Let me know if its any good. I may have to read it later."
It was really good! I enjoyed it a lot, reminded me of Darynda Jones Charlie Davidson series!

Book: Falling Stars by V.C. Andrews
Qualification: #5 in Series
Finished: 9/5/2019
Rating: **
Review: I had a hard time getting into this book. It's one that I've tried to read over and over again and I keep getting bored. I just finished it so I could be done with the series. I like VC Andrews but this one kind of missed the mark.

Review:
This book was so much fun. Full of ghosts, cats and craziness. I enjoyed the characters but I feel like the reader doesn't really get to know the real Lance. Mainly because you can't tell when he is himself and when he is possessed. Victor sounds fun but I am wondering how far he will go. I am definitely gonna read more of this series.

Book: In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette by Hampton Sides
Qualification: Standalone
Finished: 9/7/19
Rating: 4 stars
Review: In post-Civil War America, young men were looking for ways to become heroes without a war, and exploration of the last unknowns were a great opportunity. One of the closest unknowns to the US was the North Pole, and a variety of myths existed about what you could find up there (and it wasn't Santa Claus, yet!). A group of Navy men, civilian scientists, Chinese immigrants and Alaskan natives decided to make the journey based on these myths and financed by the owner of The New York Herald, a paper known for creating news by paying for it. A quick search of Wikipedia will give you the facts about what happened to the USS Jeannette, but the author does a great job of recreating this tragic voyage into a compelling narrative.

That Second Chance by Meghan Quinn
Qualification: Getting Lucky #1
Date: 9/7/19
Rating: 3
Review: A few years back, Griffin Knightley and his brothers spent a drunken weekend in New Orleans, where a palm reader cast a spell on their love lives. Stuff happens to make Griffin believe in the curse, and he hasn't been able to get past it since. Ren Winters moves to Port Snow, Maine, to start a job as the new algebra teacher, and to get away from her over-protective parents. The first thing that happens to her is an accident, and Griffin is the guy who saves her. She and Griffin become friends and all of a sudden his family and the town are rooting for them to get together. I've really loved Meghan Quinn's other books, but this one fell a bit short for me. I didn't connect to either MC - Griffin was an idiot, and Ren seemed like the kind of girl who started picking out wedding patterns after the first date (no, this didn't happen, but I felt like it easily could have.) I did like the other Knightley brothers, so I'll probably keep reading the series

Review: This was a cute cozy mystery that takes place in small-town, coastal Maine. I was up that way last summer, so it was fun to hear references to places that I had been. The mystery wasn't terribly exciting, but like an episode of Murder, She Wrote, it was entertaining, if not especially revelatory.
