About That Contest...

I have just written something for that Zombie Summer Vacation contest, but all I could write was 300+ words, as well as the fact that it ends with a punchline. Do you have any suggestions for me?-JW

You could try filling in backstory, why each character is there, how they got there. If it doesn't meet the specified word count and is really short you could publish it on your website as flash fiction, or if longer a short story. Three hundred words is flash fiction.

I was hoping another moderator might answer this, one who is connected to the contest. I know the stories have to be at least a thousand words long.

Without seeing your story it's hard to come up with specific ideas, but M.L.'s suggestion is good. Maybe adding a dinky subplot would add a few words. Beef up the descriptions of the setting and characters.

I go with the idea of beefing up the descriptions of settings and characters. But not excessively though, in order not to make the plot seem somewhat insignificant. Explanation of events could be done elaborately too, while maintaining the line of story and at the same time providing some rich content.
