ABANDONED. Boy in coma is haunted by something supernatural/own ghosts

I remember almost nothing about this one, but I think I read it maybe 13 years ago. There's a boy who's in a coma, and it's pretty creepy – he's haunted by something, I think we get a lot of insight into what he's thinking/experiencing while he's in the coma.

Meanwhile, the story dwells a lot on the father (at least I think it's the father) and the woman he chose to spend his life with. Apparently, he only chose her (instead of another) because she was the one who most needed comfort/help.

Can't guess what age group this was geared towards; might be YA or might be for adults.
