I managed to find this interview with Gillian Flynn and her book Gone Girl. This should make for a good discussion about endings in a book after we read The Girl With A Clock WIth A Heart. She makes a lot of interesting points here.

just an FYI: that article gives away the ending of Gone Girl, so reader beware!

I forgot about that. I'm kind of tempted to take it down but I guess we can say that if you haven't read Gone Girl, then don't click on the link. Thanks for letting me know.

My pleasure. Don't take it down -- you can always edit your original post to say that there's a spoiler in the article if you haven't read the book.

Good point. I put spoiler alert up there. I think there is another way of doing it but I'm not that tech savvy.

I think it's perfect as is.

Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

Just to set the record straight, I did not like the ending of this book. I really wanted to throw it against the wall.

I LOVED that ending! It may be one of the most twistiest of all mystery novels ever!

The second sentence is true. I know that a lot of people feel differently about this but that's why we're here.

Here is a post regarding thoughts on the ending of Shutter Island.

Gary Van Cott | 63 comments I have read two books this year, both from series, where I didn't like the ending. My response is to lower my score.

In one case the main character ended a relationship that I though was good for her. This could have waited for the beginning of the next book. In the other the author killed off a supporting character that I liked that had been introduced in that book.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree with you on that. I would do the same thing. What were the books? I may not want to read them based on this.

message 13: by Gary (new)

Gary Van Cott | 63 comments I will just give the authors. I don't want to influence anyone else. The first book was by Harry Bingham. I gave it 4.5 stars. I would not want to prevent anyone from reading it.

The second was approaching the midpoint of the Ackroyd and Thackeray series by Patricia Hall. I have given the books I have read so far 3 or 3.5 stars.

I'll check them out. Thanks.

I heard they didn't change the ending for the movie version.

Kirsten (kmcripn) There is one Agatha Christie mystery where the narrator did it. That aggravated me so much I refused to read first person books for YEARS! (Maybe even decades.)

I am not a fan of first person. Usually too much information. It is worst when the first person narrator is the villain.

Marianne Williams | 2 comments The ending of Gone Girl Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn was last year's throw against the wall pick.

This year's winner is The Heist The Heist (Gabriel Allon, #14) by Daniel Silva , the plot twist at the end was ridiculous. I am beginning to think this series has jumped the shark.

Agree on Gone Girl. I'm surprised about Daniel Silva. Really good writer. I may have to avoid this book.

Sorry Betty, I'm going to have to ask what ARC is. I'm sure it's something that I should know but I have to ask.

One book that comes to mind as a writer for first person is Archer Mayor. Great writer. Might want to check him out.

My wife has a book that has a set of Agatha Christie stories. I think there was eight of them. I was wondering if this was one of them. It's not on there. Thanks for letting me know.

Honestly, that's my favorite Christie novel. I loved the brazeness of subverting the readers' assumptions that they could implicitly trust the narrator. I thought it was a great twist and I absolutely didn't see it coming.
