I haven't completed Part One yet, but I feel like I've been neglecting you!
I REALLY like Death as a narrator. He doesn't sound as creepy and cunning as you'd probably picture him to, but I am liking his avid display of curiosity toward humans, especially Liesel (aka the Book Thief).
From how much I've read thus far, Liesel hasn't done much so I cannot say a lot on my opinion of her yet, but she definitely seems realistic. DON'T WANT AN REALISTIC MAIN CHARACTER, DON'T YOU KNOW?!
I also like Hans Hubermann. He seems like a nice, fun dude. :) He sort of reminds me of my Uncle Guy, without the tendency to get drunk at parties and yell sarcastically "GET FUCK OUT OF HERE!" when everyone has to leave.
And like I said before, I am really thankful that I am getting most of these historical allusions, such as Hitler's Mein Kampf. World War II was literally one of the only topics I paid attention to in US History, and my Papa was WWII veteran so it generally entices my interest.

since i am from germany wwII is a subject in every class ever (german, history, art, music....) reading a book about that time period is sort of normal xou could really nearly say that in each year we get to read a book at least somehow dealing with that topic
but death as a narrator O.O thats definetley a change!
you father is a veteran? has he told you some old stories pretty intereting
ohh and i forgot to mention that i am sort of a history nerd :P (took it as one of my final classes in hogh school)

*Siiigh* I would love to visit Germany someday, especially Berlin. I've been going to the Oktoberfest in New York since I was like 5-years old. I've even got my own traditional German dress that my grandparents bought me! Mainly, I'm a lover of the folk dances and liveliness. :)
And you given nonfiction book based on that time period (WWII) to read, or books like the Book Thief that have historical references (historical fiction, basically)?
I KNOW! IT IS SO COOL! I'm really loving his perception of things and... I don't know. Thus far, the book sort of characterizes him as observant and curious, and I find his persona kind of adorable. Is that bad? Am I supposed to be thinking that Death is ADORABLE? I may need to see a therapist after reading this book. xD
Have you read any other books like that, or that perhaps has Death as an actual character?
Oh, haha! When I said "Papa", I meant my mother's father. I believe he did tell me some stories, but I was young and didn't know what the hell he was talking about and I probably just wanted to get back to my precious television. I should really ask him again sometime soon. It would be perfect while reading this book, or sometime after while it's still fresh in my mind.
For me, tied to the word "nerd" is "fanatic." So you are not only a "history nerd" but a "HISTORY FANATIC"! I occasionally wish I was interested into history, since knowing our past helps us evolve, but I don't think I ever had the right teachers. All of them were either boring and monotone, taught us primarily through the words of our dreary textbooks, or is so unorganized with her lectures that one moment she is talking about women's suffrage and the next she's talking about eggs and how she makes them in the morning. :P

I dont think that i have ever read a book narrated by death but i do think that i once read a book where it was personificated but i dont remember which
ah ok.. but you definetley should!!! i once wrote a whole essay surrounding moroccos liberation movement from france by using my great-great grandfather as a base (does that sentence even make sence... oh well) he was a freedom fighter and the essay started with me telling his story and than explaining the movement itself
sooooo much fun!!! really! XD
i would say really really interested in history i really enjoy watching documentaries about the past and read about etc thats probably why historcial fiction is one of my fav genres ;D
totally agree history is just soo interesting and there is just sooo much to learn from our mistakes from the past etc etc
ohh i know that feeling like my first physics teacher grah but the secound one made me love it soooooooo much these moments just show that the way a teacher teaches (...XD) is more than important!!!
although i had actually pretty great and passionate teachers in history one of them was just wonderful when she started telling stories it felt like we were all actually there with her *_____*
Let's discuss it! What is your opinion on Death being the narrator? Do you like our protagonist, Liesel Meminger? What are your thoughts on the second World War?
