Jay O'dell | 9 comments Hello,

First I'd like to warn that I don't remember much of the actual storyline so I can't be sure of how much I am telling is a spoiler. Please forgive me if it turns out to be a spoiler.

The book I am looking for was one that I read in middle school, around 2005-2006(I am in my final year of college), so it has been several years since I have seen it. However, I do remember that it had a dark, older cover with cover art that looked like something from the 80's. There was a man on the cover, he was pale and essentially bare chested (the rest was left out)and I remember wings. He reminded me of a sadden, fallen angel like character. That is all I remember of the physical cover but there was certainly more.

I don't remember much of the story. All I remember is that there is a demon prince of some sort who carts young women off to his castle for the rest of their lives (which is apparently not very long). The main character is one of those girls. She ends up at his castle and this is where it starts to become very Beauty and the Beast style. She is not allowed to the leave the castle and the demon guy treats her pretty coldly (yet she does fall in love at some point with her captor). She does get to wander around the castle. She finds her way into some of the deepest parts of the castle where she befriends this gnome like character. They connect and are the best of friends in the middle of no where.

Now, through out the story, the girl has two goals: one, escape the castle which she quickly finds is impossible, and two, free the demon from the curse that is on him. To break the spell several things have to happen. The part I remember most is that he has to have his heart returned him but something happens that prevents this so the ending is a little dark at first with what the main character decides to do. However, after everything is resolved, as in most fantasy, fairy-style storytelling, they escape the gruesome castle and supposedly live happily ever after.

Okay, spoiler for sure after this line.

The ending was weird. First, we weren't told if they did actually live happily ever after. All we know is that they get into this boat thing in the middle of the desert together and the wind pushes them off into the wild blue yonder. Apparently the boat had wheels? I don't think I ever did comprehend that part.

So I have been looking for years for this book. I can't believe I could never remember the name. I don't think it was a popular publication because most people have never heard of this type of storyline. Honestly, it reminded me a bit of Howl's Moving Castle (in terms of storyline and cover art). If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.
