Sandra | 336 comments I read this book when I was growing up in the mid to late 1970s. It had an orchid or an orchid corsage on the cover. I'm pretty sure it was published in the '40s or '50s.

I really only remember one story. It took place during World War II. The family had a servant, I think, named Hattie, who kept giggling and using the phrase "It's the berries!" One of the sisters had a sometime boyfriend who was either seriously injured or killed in an aviation accident. I assume he was in the Air Force. She got a telegram or a letter announcing this, and very shakily said s/thing to her mom like, "Badly burned--Mother, what does that mean?"

It's possible that the book could be "Sixteen and Other Stories" by Maureen Daly. Not sure, though.

EDIT: it is NOT the Maureen Daly book.

That's all I recall! Thanks.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Do you remember if the stories were all written by the same author?
Did all of the stories take place during WWII?
Were the stories all from the same genre, like romance, drama, fantasy, etc?

I am not sure if they were all written by the same author, or if they all took place during WWII. I do believe they were all romance, though.

I am pretty sure this book was published around WWII, and it looks like these were all published following the war. Thanks, though!

Rainbowheart | 28723 comments Originally you said '50s, do you think now it was definitely from the '40s?

message 14: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 336 comments I think it is more likely to have been the '40s, yes.

Sandra | 336 comments It's a possibility! As soon as I have access to interlibrary loan again, I will put in for it. Thanks!

Adele | 1435 comments This looks very promising When Mother was a Girl - Stories She Read Then This collection was published in the sixties but all the stories are from the forties, so it would make sense that you read it in the seventies but felt like the stories were much older. Also, one of the reviews mentions a story where a sister knows a boy who was killed in the war. You can see the cover on amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/When-Mother-Fr... and I think that's a corsage at the top

That very well might be it! That does look like an orchid corsage. I think I'll try and find a used copy and then report back here. Thank you very much, Adele!

SOLVED!

Adele, the book arrived, and it is the right one! I must thank you for your help with this. I never thought I'd find it. Curious: How DID you do it?

Also, there is no dust jacket. Do you or anyone here know of how to get a copy of a dust jacket for a vintage book?

Thanks again!

Adele | 1435 comments That's great news! I'm really glad it was the right one. I'm embarrassed to admit I don't remember exactly how I found it. I know I searched for key words of girls, stories, and war and I did a really wide date range. Then I got lucky with the review that mentioned the story you remember and I searched separately to find a cover image to check that against your description. Regarding the dust jacket, I don't know if there is a way to get a copy of the dust jacket only, but based on the photograph this seller's copy has the dust jacket: https://www.ebay.com/itm/When-Mother-... If you go that route I would contact the seller first to verify the book really does have the dust jacket. Thanks for updating to let us know you got it. :D

The funniest thing is, my memories of that particular story are pretty accurate. The maid was named Hallie, not Hattie, and the expression was "it's the fruit," not "it's the berries"--but she was handing out a plate of berries at the time! Also, the line about the soldier being badly burned--almost verbatim.

I'm kind of known in my family for having a good memory. :)
