Anita Pomerantz | 9299 comments I was on vacation in Iceland last week, and I really missed you all and hearing about your reading. I love how I got home at 2 am and popped up at 6 am as if I never left the U.S. I'm sure later will be a different story lol.

Hope you all had a great week of reading and book discussing.

Thanks Cindy, Nicole, and Anna for holding down the fort while I was out of town!

Susie We missed you too! It looked amazing. Did you have a fabulous time? And did you get much reading done?

Never mind did she get any reading done...did she shop any wonderful bookstores and find any new authors or titles?

Good to see you back! I know you had a fab time!

Ellen | 3522 comments Welcome back! The photos were beautiful and you two looked like you were having a fabulous time. My husband was stationed there for a year and he has never stopped telling me how stunningly beautiful Iceland is.

Sadly no on the reading front. It was a very busy/active trip. I read a lot on the plane rides and in the airport, but during the actual trip not so much :(

Ha ha, no shopping on this trip, and the one cute bookstore in the airport had books all written in Icelandic.

Thank you so much, Ellen! We had fun though honestly of the five Backroads trip I've taken, this one was my least favorite. It was still good. I just think we are getting better at taking pictures!

I hope you can too if you wish too, but I'm not going to lie - - I thought the Canadian Rockies were much more beautiful . . .

Iceland is very varied so it's a great trip for people who haven't traveled much as it has volcanoes, glaciers, very interesting geological formations, unusual moon like scenery, waterfalls . . .but I felt a little like you could see more dramatic renditions in other locales i.e. Hawaii for waterfalls/volcanoes, Yellowstone for geologic formations, etc.

The one thought is that if you go, I'd go when you can see the Northern Lights - - which is not summer.

My favorite part, by far, was seeing the puffins. I loved them!!!

Karin | 9249 comments Welcome back! And now you know why in Iceland the saying is, basically, if you get lost in the woods, stand up!

It is a fabulous country--my cousin and her partner were in Vancouver while you were there, or I'd have seen if you could have met if you were interested.

Are you saying you don't want to spend years learning the Icelandic alphabet and language so you can read those books ;) I don't blame you. Also, Iceland is so cool and scenic (I'd love to go someday) that why would you want to spend a lot of time reading?

Lol on the woods - - our guide told us that joke! I'm short so not quite, but close.

I look forward to hearing about your cousin's impressions. We were on an active tour with a group so didn't have a lot of latitude in our schedule, but that's the third person I'm somehow connected to who was there at the same time!

My mother has a little stuffed puffin as a momento of her visit there! She loved them too.

Oh, she loves it. She went there with a three year scholarship to study Icelandic, applied for and got citizenship and lives in Rekjavik. We are half Icelandic by heritage on our mothers' sides so it's possible that helped, but I have no idea. My mother grew up bilingual, but hers not so much since the grandmother who refused to speak English died when they were 11 and 2 respectively.

Karin | 9249 comments FYI you can see puffins in Newfoundland, the other Maritime provinces and even off the coast of New England (not that I have).

BUT, Iceland is still so fabulous and you get to see them a lot, apparently.

Wow, well, I guess it's a matter of just being used to the Rockies being right there, and wanting to see other places!

Without a car, it's not like I get there often (though they can - on clear days - be seen from a distance some places in the city), but I have been out there plenty of times, even still.

I was going to say I have seen puffins in Nfld! They are soooo cute! I've only been to Nfld once, but I would love to get back. It's beautiful, too!

Again, I guess it's a matter of the novelty - I loved being right by the ocean, which is a novelty for me, growing up on the prairie, and remaining at the edge of the prairie now, as an adult (with those Rockies sometimes visible in the opposite direction!).

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I was totally getting vacation-envy looking at all your pictures, Anita. Not gonna lie, I've never heard of Backroads trips before, had to do a quick google. Looks amazing (looking at you Peru trip) but I don't think we can afford it at this point in my life, lol.

I've been looking at IcelandAir's stopover program, can add a 2-5 stay "extended layover" to and from europe at no additional cost- seems very reasonable. I've heard costs there are quite high (food & entertainment/fun things). We had a 2-hour layover in the Reykjavik airport and it made me want to see the country.

Thank you for your kind words about the photos, Joi. Backroads puts on a great trip I will say that, but they aren't inexpensive and neither is Iceland . . .I like the idea of using the extended stopover as a way to visit as opposed to a destination in and unto itself.
