Paganalexandria | 4065 comments I've been out of the IR loop lately. Thinking of coming back in the fold but don't want to get scared away again. What was best recent IR book you've read recently because I need some recs?

TinaNoir | 1456 comments I have pushed the pause button on IR reads for awhile, but some that I have enjoyed recently:

Lakota Dreaming by Constance Gillam - BW, NAM
Wolf Bite (Wolves of Willow Bend, #1) by Heather Long - BW, WM (also this is a first in the series. The follow up book is also good, not IR but this couple is still present because they are the Alpha couple)
Freeing Carter by Nyrae Dawn - BW, WM (I don't do YA, but this was a stand out)

Indigo.plume | 105 comments What kind of romance books do you enjoy most? Fun and sassy? Serious? Sexy? Sweet? Books that explore issues other than just the relationship between the main characters? Simple plot? Complex plot? Suspenseful?

Depending on your preferences, I might be able to recommend one or two :-)

That cover is so pretty to me.

Indigo, I'm pretty open to anything not YA or too clean. I tend to get more invested in the emotional, or action based. I love bad boys, like mobsters, bikers, or kinky billionaires (lol). A can have humor, but not overly silly plots. No IR UF or PNR please.

Indigo.plume | 105 comments Before Sunrise Before Sunrise by Sienna Mynx

This one was a pretty emotional read with some action in it. It didn't strike me as too sweet or too clean. I haven't read enough IR to be able to recommend much that you haven't read already. I noticed that Sienna Mynx has a lot of fans in this community of readers.

Also, I just published a book that has a pretty dark, emotional, and suspenseful storyline. My book doesn't have a bad boy type in it, instead the heroine is a bad girl with a tragic past that comes back to haunt her when a stalker starts following her around. I'm not sure if it's polite to post my own book on this thread, so I'll just mention it and leave it at that, lol. If you are interested in mine, I guess you will find a way to let me know.

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 1216 comments I just can't rave enough about Natural Beauty by Leslie DuBois . This little gem had it all. I'm still looking for a book on the level of this one.

I also finished Stereo by Trevion Burns , and while far from perfect, it was compulsively readable. Not to mention the book was a nice 300-plus pages. No insta-love here. The heroine drove me crazy, but she was still likeable in a strange sort of way.

Natural Beauty was good! It was a novella but you got a full story which some novellas sometimes lack.

Connie | 761 comments Shades of Gray (Anchors Away) by Shara Azod was a good book of acknowledgement of Domination and submission. It was light, but it showed a very good aspect of what the hero wanted out of a woman, but the heroine was not weak. It is hard line to draw between being strong and being just stubborn for no good reason. Ms. Azod did a good job of creating a strong woman.

I also just finished reading Incarcerated by Inger Iversen and that was just as good, but this storyline is about a lonely author and an inmate becoming pen pals and falling for one another despite their differences. The kicker to this story is that the hero is racist.

message 24: by A.W. (new)

A.W. Connie thanks for the postings! I am definitely going to check out Incarcerated for sure.

I would love to read her take on Red Riding Hood or Snow White. Her mind must be a fun place, lol.

@Justine, every book by Pepper Pace that I have read has an HEA, but it takes work to get there. It's one of her newer books but a great place to start if you don't want to begin with the heavier stuff is The Throwaway Year by Pepper Pace . This one was had angst, but nothing outside of the romance norm and is really great!

Loved Beast. Great beta hero. Nuances between being vain and being fine with how you are were well-treated in the story.

Vallsykes | 29 comments I liked Only Love by Victoria H. Smith . At least, it is a decent read. At most, it involved a focus on the relationship dynamic that included social politics. The hero was done well. The heroine wasn't too annoying and the setting had an appeal.

3 to 4 stars ( I gave it 4), but not a stellar read, as it is a little rough around the edges (w/ elements of resolution, backstory and detail, I found a tad-bit lacking).

I do recommend it though. My review

message 45: by Justine (new)

Justine | 1361 comments Thanks everyone for the information on P Pace. I have always glanced at her work on Amazon, but never read any. Thought they would be full of angst and non HEA.

I'll certainly check them out now.

Agnes Moor's Wild Knight by Alyssa Cole was indeed awesome. It was short, but I felt like the author actually told a complete and filling story with amazing characters. I wish more authors would write historicals in this vein.

I started The Calum by Xio Axelrod , and even though it plays heavily on my "so done with the light-skin preference" trope, I love the characters, especially the lead heroine and her best friend. And being a huge Jamie Fraser fangirl from way back when, what's not to love about a book that lovingly plays up that whole Outlander obsession?

Its on my to do list to research more of the African and Asian presence during this time period so that I can write in this world. I think Alyssa Cole has opened a door for IR authors and I too hope a lot of us follow her in!
