ABANDONED. dark psychological thriller about a man whose son died in a car accident and tries to take revenge

This story is set somewhere in the UK, about a middle aged man whose son, 5 or 6 years old at the time, has died in a car accident. Everything in the book happens a few years after the accident. The driver of the car that killed the child was exonerated and the father goes after him. He becomes obsessed with this man and starts following him, his daughter, starts sending him threatening letters written using newspaper cutouts. As the plot progresses, he seems no longer able to control himself and everything goes wrong. He has an affair with his wife's best friend, the wife realizes what is happening and leaves him, going back to Scotland. Towards the end of the book he tries to get a new colleague he's got at work, a young, strong willed guy, to back him up but that guy turns him in.
Everything in the book is dark, kind of hopeless.

When did you read it or when was it published? Is it standalone or part of series?

I've read it in 2005 but it was published long before that, as a standalone book I believe, probably in the '80s or the '90s.
