I'm a big fan of The Case of the Missing Servant, which is the first in a funny series about an Indian detective. The author is English, but works as a journalist throughout the sub-continent and is married to an Indian journalist. The result is a book that, at least to me who has never been there, gives a realistic portrayal of everyday life in New Delhi but also explains the small things that a native author would just assume everyone knew.

Nadine in NY Jones | 2286 comments I am LOVING the Listopia lists!!! This post is such a convenient way to find them, too. Could one of the mods flag this post as "important" so it stays at the top?

Doing that now :)

message 108: by Avery (new)

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments Any chance we can also link the Listopias to the ATY community Spreadsheet on the 2020 Plans tab? I know that may be an annoying task though!

message 109: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11250 comments Mod
I can work on that today! I thought about doing it, but, for some of them, I wasn't sure if people would rather have a link to the listopia or to the article/list mentioned.

And just a reminder that all of these listopias will be linked in each week's thread when we create the weekly threads for 2020! They will be easier to access there as well.

For now, I'm trying to fill my plan with only books on my tbr and after I'm done I will look through all the lists in search of books that might interest me.

message 112: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3286 comments I'm finding it surprisingly difficult to research the 10 Most Coveted Literary Prizes. I can generally find the most recent winners and/or nominees, but for at least some of them (Specsavers, for example), I can't find anything for previous years.

message 113: by Serendipity (new)

Serendipity | 441 comments According to Wikipedia that may be because they don’t actually exist anymore.it looks like the UK National Book Awards have undergone a series of revamps and had different sponsors. Specsavers only held sponsorship rights for a couple of years. Although I have also found sites that list winners right up to 2018 but they might be including winners of the awards post-Specsavers. Our UK readers probably know more than me.

message 114: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11250 comments Mod
I would say that since Specsavers sponsored the National Book Awards for the UK for just a brief time, it's still in the spirit of the prompt to use any book that won or was nominated for the National Book Award in the UK any year, not just the year that Specsavers sponsored it.

Here's a Wikipedia for it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British...

Sophie, my list for Maxmillian Hell's is in message 76.. it didn't make it to the master list.

I've been putting all of our lists on the community spreadsheet under the 2020 Plans tab. Here are a few that I realized we were missing:

Book by an author you loved: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
20th book: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
One syllable author's last name: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
Published in a prime number year: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
Genre that starts with a letter in your name: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
Authors whose name you don't know how to pronounce: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
Something you were inspired to read: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

message 116: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments @Rachel, which ones are you having difficulty with? For Nobel Prize in literature the books themselves are not always listed because it is given to the body of the author's work, and you can therefore choose any book by those authors (and if you are strict, any that were published by the time of receiving the prize).

Specsavers was definitely the most difficult. Neustadt also seems to be by author, rather than specific books, as far as I can tell. The Booker Prize site is also a bit tricky to navigate, but I think I've figured out where to look now. I'm having some trouble with the Costa awards also, since the website I found seems to direct me to a coffee shop.

Rachel, it does seem like Costa is a coffee shop that happens to have a super prestigious book award lol.

I found the shortlist for 2018 here:
https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-en...

And the shortlist for 2017 here:
http://www.dublincity.ie/story/costa-...

Here's 2016:

And 2015:

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments haha yes Costa coffee :)
Well I just looked - they are the ones behind the award. These awards are not always good at lists.
List of winners - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costa...
to the see the nominees I'm afraid you'll have to go by year. Unless someone is up to making the listopia list with all of them?

Neustadt seems to also be by author as you say - here's a direct link to the list:

Rachel, Costa is a chain of coffee shops, but they also give out book awards in I think 5 categories. These awards used to be called the Whitbread awards and they have been given for about 50 years, and they changed name when Costa took Whitbread over. If you search for Costa Book Awards it should take you to the right bit of the Costa website.

Or if a mod has to do it, these are the titles:

Wyrd Sisters
Bless Me, Ultima
The Witches of New York

Stacey D. | 1908 comments Chinook wrote: "For the binary topics, I’d say maybe people just add both books and include their partner book in the notes, since the list doesn’t always stay in order."

Thanks for putting that great list together, Chinook. Still, I'm a little lost on the pair of binary opposites. I'm assuming that this means one can choose books with binary opposites stated in the title, or binary opposites in theme - or having to do with both. Is that correct?

In other words, I'm considering two books that have virtually nothing to do with each other, except for the binary opposites (stop and go) stated in their titles. Is that okay?

message 132: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 639 comments Yes, I think that the binary opposites could be in any form - theme, title, even author’s name.

Good show! Thanks so much. I also found that doing a simple search through my TBR by popping in the opposite words brought up a ton of good choices, too.

On the list for the prompts that didn't win, I think the link is broken that states what the prompts were. Can you fix, please? Thank you!!

message 150: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2994 comments Emily, you should apply to be a librarian as then you can edit other people's lists. It looks like the wrong kind of quotation marks were used so it should work now.
