Florence | 683 comments Hi! I’m looking for a story I loved as a kid. I can’t remember if it was a standalone short book or in an anthology. This little round green monster (who I feel was called mile, though I may be mixing memories with monsters inc as they look similar) lived or found himself in a bottle bank and he liked crunching and smashing up the bottles? Pretty sure it was a pro-recycling kind of story. I would have read it at some point in the 90s. I’m pretty certain it was illustrated.

Florence | 683 comments *mike, or possibly Melvin? I feel like there was an M. There was definitely a part where he went in through the holes at the top of the bottle bank.

Florence, around what year did you read this book? A range of years is fine. This will help us narrow down the search.

Is this a picture book (about 32-48 pages) or a chapter book with mostly words?

Can you describe the illustrations - realistic/cartoony/cute, simple/detailed, painted watercolors/bold graphics, bright/dark/muted colors/black & white? Do they remind you of another illustrator or picture book author?

This book appears to be too recent, but I'll mention it just in case - I Can Save the Earth! One Little Monster Learns to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle by Alison Inches I Can Save the Earth!: One Little Monster Learns to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle by Alison Inches? The little monster is named Max.

(Google search > Images tab > site:www.goodreads.com "middle grade" "green monster" bottle recycling)

Florence | 683 comments I can save the earth isn’t the one but thank you!
I would have read it in the mid 90s. It’s a picture book. The pictures are in colour and fairly detailed I think.

Rainbowheart | 28668 comments Was the book British?

I had to look up "bottle bank." I think it's what people in the U.S. would call a recycling bin. Only it's a public one, according to pics.

Florence | 683 comments yes it's British! I think it MIGHT have been in a ladybird (or similar) "stories for x year olds" type book.

Daisy | 1 comments Hi Florence! I was putting some bottles in the bottle bank today and thought to look up this book. The monster's name was Cyril! You were right about the other details. Here it is: https://youtu.be/w25KFo95YK4.
