SOLVED. Choose your own adventure style book on strange planet [s]

I'm trying to remember the title/locate a book that we had in the late 80s/early 90s. It was set on a strange planet, and what I recall about it was that you're in the desert, it's really hot, and you find a "shield", that, if you choose to pick it up, latches on to you and begins to suck all the blood from your body, and the next several choices in the book had to do with removing this shield before it killed you. Later, that choice wound up affecting other choices in the book. I know it wasn't choose your own adventure brand, and was a bit more complex and mature than that series.

The thing you pick up is called a glamp. (I remember that without googling.) There was a sequel that I didn't read.

I love this group I read this when I was a kid forgot all about it until I saw this thread. I loved these types of books when I was a kid wonder what they would be like for a re-read as an adult.
