Why is Ishmael so wise?

I want to know what y'all think about why Ishmael is so wise. After all, he is a gorilla and can't just walk around civilization. He has the feel of a very old, very wise prophet-like man, yet he is a monkey who can't be over 15 or 20. Your thoughts?

I find it intriguing how, when an athor offers some aspects of a story as givens, readers will often be more troubled by one while completely accepting of the other. So we wonder how Ishmael came to be so wise - whether that 'fits' - but are left seemingly untroubled by the fact that he is a talking gorilla. :)

Maybe gorillas' lives are like dogs' lives--measured differently? Although I do agree with Abbas that if we're going to accept a talking gorilla, we can easily accept his wisdom. Forgot to say I loved the book!

Ishmael has actually been around since the '30s, as stated in the book. So he had quite a long time to read, learn, and develop such knowledge.

Huh, it never even occoured to me to question the age thing. I mean thinking about age objectively it means nothing. I know many who are older and not wise and many who are younger who humble me.
I suppose the saying " its not the years, but the miles" may be true.

BTW this is one of my must read atlest 1 time per year books!
