This is A. Solzhenitsyn's memoir and the cry for freedom for his country is the compelling theme of the book. He explains how he came about the reputation for being so difficult, it was a survival necessity. He expresses better than I have ever read the cowardice of the bureaucrat types he was forced to deal with and the terrible toll perpetrated on the people of Russia and within the Soviet sphere of influence. I could go on but this is a difficult read and well worth the effort.
