Hunchback Jack | 545 comments Peggy, I know of two:

Audiobook Binder for Mac.

I downloaded Audiobook Binder for Mac and now can't for the life of me figure out how to get a book from Overdrive into it. The book from Overdrive gets downloaded to my Mac in a Zip file. I can't drag it into Audiobook Binder and can't open any individual files. Has anyone else with a Mac done this? Then, if you get the files in Audiobook Binder, and can convert the format, are you able to bring it into Audible? Is this making sense?

Thanks in advance!

Powder River Rose (powderriverrose) | 129 comments Donna: message 47. Thank you for that. I found the overdrive program on the Mac and know it will play the files but not as nicely as the apps do. I'm assuming I can download to the computer and then transfer to the iPhone as I don't want to use the computer to listen with. It all just takes a little time to play with but sometimes it's easier to ask......I will see about the converter...

Thanks to everyone.

Maybe first unpack the zip file?

Thanks you Hunchback! Suddenly my Audiobook Builder stopped working and will not be restarted. I will not even go to the trouble of re installing, I will go and have a look at Audibook Binder, which is free, o joy.

I'm not the only one with the ABB not working any more, maybe a little time bomb went off...

Specs Bunny (specsbunny) | 494 comments Update: for those using Audibook Builder, the issue seems to have been solved, or at least can be solved: http://www.splasmata.com/?p=3042

But I doubt I will bother. I have used the free Audiobook binder HJ recommended yesterday, and it did the job much faster and without the flaws ABB sometimes had (all chapters twice in a file e.g.).

Terri Moore (lectiodivinaaz) | 1 comments The main reason I would want to use Audible for my Overdrive MP3s is that this is the only app used by the Amazon Echo (at least that I know of). I would love to just ask Alexa to start playing my (formerly) Overdrive audiobook. It's easy to get it into iTunes, but still can't make it an m4b or aax, unless maybe I burn it to disc first, then rip it using new file type and merge settings. Guess I will try that. Such a pain, but I really want to hear my books on my Echo. I'll let you know if it works.

Hunchback Jack | 545 comments Specs, I'm glad you find Audiobook Binder useful. I use it all the time, and really like it. It's simple to use but has the features I want as well.

Specs Bunny (specsbunny) | 494 comments Yes, simple to use and no bugs -so far. Although since joining audible I use much less cd's that have to be changed to m4b.

Hunchback Jack | 545 comments One thing about making m4b files is that you need to adjust the sample rate (NOT the bit rate) based on the duration of the audiobook, to ensure it will play correctly on some players - include iOS devices.

This table shows the max length supported at each sample rate:

Sample rate of 8.0 kHz = 74.6 hrs max
Sample rate of 12.0 kHz = 49.7 hrs max
Sample rate of 16.0 kHz = 37.3 hrs max
Sample rate of 22.05 kHz = 27.1 hrs max
Sample rate of 24.0 kHz = 24.9 hrs max
Sample rate of 32.0 kHz = 18.6 hrs max
Sample rate of 44.1 kHz = 13.5 hrs max
Sample rate of 48.0 kHz = 12.4 hrs max

So a 20 hour audiobook should be encoded at 24.0 kHz. This is regardless of chapter size.

If you don't do this, some players will have trouble seeking and playing positions near the end of the book.

HJ, I used Chapter and Verse for a couple of years when I was working with libravox; however I haven't used it since I upgraded to Win10, and when I tried today, it made me upgrade. Now it won't let me convert mp3 files until after I've converted them to AAC files.... sigh.... I've never used Audiobook Binder, will I have to go thru all of these "changes" with that too? Which of the two do you prefer? <><

message 63: by Hunchback Jack (new)

Hunchback Jack | 545 comments Ms. Jodi, sorry I didn't see your post until now.

Yes, I don't like Chapter and Verse so much because of that. I prefer Audiobook Binder. However, the former is Windows while the latter is Mac OS X.

I'm sorry, I don't know of a free m4b creator on Windows that converts mp3s in one step.

Ha! I was afraid you were going to say that.... LOL

... and it's ok that it took a couple of days, cause I went out of town for several days, and am just now getting back to the computer... sigh... <><

Steven King | 1 comments I know this is an old post, but I found a work around that only seems to take a few extra clicks.

What I have done is simply this:
1. imported mp3 files into itunes, they are listed under music.
2. select get info on the first file of the book
under details tab add 01 to the album field. for example The Girl With All the Gifts becomes 01 The Girl With All the Gifts
click the options tab and change music to audiobook and click ok
3. do this for all remaining book files
4. goto books then click audiobooks and you will see each part as its own book which you can now drag to you phone and they will show up in audible with the proper part label so you can listen in the correct order at the speed you want.

I know this can be painful for books with many many parts, but for those with 10 or so, its only a few mins to get setup.

If someone has a more automated method, I look forward to any feedback.

Cheryl (cheryl1961) | 11 comments If you are trying to get your iTunes audiobooks (non-Audible purchases) to sync to your Audible app make sure you are signed out of your Apple Store account on iTunes. Then sync. The books you have chosen to sync should now be under the iTunes heading/button.

Cheryl (cheryl1961) | 11 comments To download Overdrive books to regular audiobooks to listen to on Audible app here's what I do. Use the desktop version of Overdrive to download your Overdrive books. Then using the Audiobook Builder app (which I have used without incident for 6 years+), I build the audiobook following usual AB instructions. The Overdrive book is now in your iTunes library to listen to whenever you desire -even after the library loaning period is over.

Where is this "iTunes heading/button" in the Audible app?
