Sue | 240 comments I'm sure this has been asked and answered but a few quick searches did not yield results - or, at least, simple ones anyway. I'm afraid that's because there are no simple answers; why oh why are there still so many incompatible formats for audiobooks?!

Anyway, I got a free download of The Girl with All the Gifts (yay!) from the Audiobook Mobile over the weekend. I downloaded the zip file to my desktop at work, and it's in 3 mp3 files. I do not want to listen using the music app on my iPhone (no bookmarks, etc.) and there is no 'iTunes library' button on my iPhone Audible app.

Is there a way to get the files into my Audible app in a way that won't require me to write code or tear my hair out?

TIA!

Tjo | 56 comments What I do (although there may be an easier way), is to create a iTunes playlist called iPhone Audiobooks. Then under my iPhone sync settings (under Book:Audiobooks), I tell iTunes to sync books from that selected playlist. When I sync my phone, the audiobooks transfer and a iTunes tab automatically pops up in my Audible app.

When you are done with your book, you may need to delete it from your Music app instead of the Audible app. You may also want to delete it from your iTunes playlist.

This may be harder than it needs to be for one audiobook, but if you are going to listen to more this way, it makes the whole process pretty painless!

Sue | 240 comments I'll give this a try, just to see if I can make it work, but I get most of my books through Audible, so hopefully it won't be a regular thing. Although, if it _does_ work smoothly, it would make Overdrive books much more appealing!

Thanks so much!

You're welcome! I dislike the Overdrive player (it tends to skip on me and not download parts correctly), so I listen to most of my Overdrive audiobooks via either Audible or an app called SpeedUp Player.

And one more thing: you may have to refresh your Audible iTunes tab after a sync. You do it the same way you do your Audible library, just hit refresh or swipe down. :-)

message 6: by Drew (new)

Drew | 45 comments If you're books are marked as the "Audiobook" type in iTunes it should recognize them in the audible app. Just sync your phone and then go to the audible app library, hit the iTunes button and refresh it.

Now if we would just play the non-audible books at a speed greater than 1X

message 7: by Sue (new)

Sue | 240 comments Right - that's what I meant. If I can get library books to play on the Audible app, that would be great. Last time I listened to a library book through iTunes, it cut off the beginning of each chapter!

message 8: by Sue (new)

Sue | 240 comments Attempt #1 didn't work - I can't seem to get the MP3 files into the Books folder. I made an Audiobooks playlist, but when I refreshed Audible after the sync, I did not get an iTunes library button. Audible thinks the book sections are music, and so it should, I guess, since they're MP3's. So frustrating!

message 9: by Sue (new)

Sue | 240 comments I think I might know what happened. Do I have to change something in my iTunes settings to have it recognize the files as a book, rather than music? I'll play around with that when I get home and try again. Thinking out loud...

message 10: by Sue (new)

Sue | 240 comments It worked, it worked!! I just had to adjust the settings on the MP3 files, then Tjo's trick worked like a charm.

Thanks for holding my hand, everyone!

message 11: by Tjo (new)

Tjo | 56 comments Glad you figured it out on your own since I just saw this!

Yes, make sure your audiobook is saved as an audiobook rather than music. Sorry I forgot that!

message 12: by Prashant (new)

Prashant Chaudhary | 2 comments Do This -
Open iTune Music Library.
Select the tracks.
Right-click and select "Get Info".
Open the "Options" tab.
Set:
Equilizer Preset = Spoken Word
Media Kind = Audiobook
Part of a compilation = No
Remember position = Yes
Skip when shuffling = Yes
Gapless album = No
Press OK.
Your file will be shifted to Book/Audiobook folder.
Just "sync" the device with iTune, you are done.

Shirley Shaw | 1 comments I was having the same problem as the OP and your discussion helped me a lot. However, after being able to import MP3s into the Audible app, I found the individual tracks are displayed and played in random order. Things don't seem to improve even when disc number and track number are correctly assigned. Is anyone else having the same issue?

message 15: by F (new)

F (fraygos) | 3 comments This about saved my life except for the one issue I like overdrive more.
The speed playback for overdrive has 1.5 which is perfect for me.
However iTunes audiobook has only .5, 1, and 2.0.
And audible does not allow speed control from audiobooks in itunes library. Sucks :(.
I guess this is as closs as I can get ...

I'm in the exact same boat. Wasted a ton of time trying to get it to work, added to a playlist, ensured it was in the right order, opened Audible and boom, everything is a joke.

I'm testing out Bookmobile, but so far I'm not horribly impressed. I tried adding through a Podcast app (Downcast) but you basically have to do it a file at a time, I'm going to try adding it in via iTunes File Sharing, but damn do they make it so hard. We're supposed to be in a post PC world, and this is certainly not embracing that.

message 17: by John (new)

John LaSala | 1 comments Has anyone licked this problem yet, regarding tracks from iTunes in the Audible app showing up out of order? I can't even figure out what order it's trying to display them in, and there seems to be no way to reorder them, neither within the Audible app nor within iTunes in the first place. It seems just plain random!

I did, it works fine for the iTunes, but doesn't help with the Audible app. :(

message 20: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 163 comments This might help with iTunes not keeping the right order.
I always rename each disk I have uploaded into in iTunes, example Attachments 01_11 and Attachments 02_11, etc.
It is important to use 01 when there are more than 9 discs.
You can go back and rename existing uploaded cd's with the 'get info' right click option or do it up front as you download. Good luck!

Have you tried Smart Audio book player? I have found that I love it way more than the audible player on my phone. I move my audible books onto that program too because I find it so much more user friendly. Plus, you have way more control over changing the speeds on Smart audio. It goes in 10% speed changes instead of the 50% change options for audible.

Laura (laura44) | 3 comments Daphne - Is that an iPhone app? I don't see it in the app store. Only Smarter Player comes up.

I got mine from google play. Smart AudioBook Player is what it's called. Everyone I know that does audiobook swears by it also. I've never actually donated to a develop before I used this program for a month, and I can't imagine it getting better.

Do you think Smart Audio app will also be able to upload downloads from Tantor? I've been frustrated with the import into iTunes because you can't bookmark in iTunes. Plus, when I listen to an iTunes book through the Audible app, it won't let you listen at a faster speed. For most books, I enjoy 1.5 speed. Finally, where can I find uploading instructions for Smart Audio. It's fairly easy to import books into iTunes. I just don't know how to do it for an app. Thanks!

I'm not sure. If I've ever had an issue with the format of something, I just reformat it to MP3.

I used this link to help me: http://mp3.about.com/od/itunes/qt/How...
Once I finished what the instructions said...then I'd connect my phone into my computer, drag the audiobook from iTunes into my phone and it would then be available in the Audible app once I synced.

I got rid my iPhone last year and switched to android. I found I couldn't get MP3 books to play in Audible like I used to, so I switched to Smart Audiobook player and found it to be much better than the Audible player. I particularly like that it has an increase volume button, which is great for when I use my Bluetooth speaker.

message 30: by Bud (new)

Bud (hockeyguy) | 6 comments I use avs audio software ($$) to convert my MP3 audio files and cd rips to m4b and drop it right into my iPhone and use audible player. (You can not convert protected files from audible but you don't need to) you can set your own chapter sizes and do other things. It was worth it for me because file size is way smaller and didn't kill my original 16gb, no space, iPhone 4.
It is the only program I know of that can convert to M4B (audiobook). All the others convert to the standard M4A (M4A doesn't show as audiobook on lphone but will still play).
Ps I now have an iPhone 6 with 64gb of room for my books.

message 31: by Tanvi (new)

Tanvi (fadetonoir) | 1 comments Does anyone know if I can do the same on my android phone? I really love the Audible app and I want to listen to books I have in the mps format in the app itself. Thanks. :)

message 32: by Michael (new)

Michael (mobe1969) | 463 comments No you can't on android for some reason. That was one of my main complaints moving ios to android, the fact I suddenly went from one player for all audiobooks and music to needing three - one for music, one for audible audiobooks, and one for non-audible audiobooks. I have "requested" that via feedback, but doubt they'll ever make the android one anything other than the poor second to the IOS one.

Lilmissmolly | 83 comments Tash wrote: "Does anyone know if the non Auidble audiobooks played in the Audible app will whispersync with your ebooks on kindle?"

I'm pretty sure they do. Whenever I purchase a Whispersync book, both appear in my Kindle carousel. I listen most frequently through my iPhone app, but if I'm in the house and open up the Kindle version of the audiobook, it asks me if I want to go to the last place I stopped listening on my iPhone. Same with the Kindle book.

One word of caution though, you must save a bookmark no matter where you stop listening. Otherwise you'll be starting on the kindle earlier in the book than when you actually stopped listening. Since I got in the habit of bookmarking every time I stop listening or reading, I've experienced no issues jumping from my iPhone to my Kindle and vice verse.

ElaineY | 11 comments Tash wrote: "Does anyone know if the non Auidble audiobooks played in the Audible app will whispersync with your ebooks on kindle?"

No, not if it's not an Audible audio. Only the Audible audiobook is synched with an Amazon Kindle - that's what the Whispersync is about.

If you bought an audiobook from another place, say directly from Tantor Audio, it won't synch with your Kindle. If you buy an Audible audio but your ebook is NOT an Amazon Kindle, it won't sync either.

So your audiobook must be an Audible audio.
Your ebook must be an Amazon Kindle.
Then they will whispersync.

Peggy (tennisplayerpeggy) | 12 comments I just joined this group after searching on Google for a long time to see if it is possible to listen to books from Overdrive on my Audible app? I have an iPhone 5. I still can't figure out if this is possible or if it is too cumbersome to be worthwhile. I just really don't like the Overdrive app and would love to have all of my audiobooks on the same app. Thanks for any input!

I'm confused....not just by Peggy's post but by many of the above. I too have an iphone5 that I listen to all my audiobooks on. Overdrive or Audible doesn't matter as far as listening since I listen at 1x always; it's true each has it's issues but they aren't that big a deal for me.
The confusion: I thought Overdrive was a library app....so how can you move them? This is not meant to really ask how, just a question.

All I really want to do is download the overdrive books to a cd or ? so I can listen later but can't figure out how to do it on a Mac or iOS device. I think I remember seeing a way on my PC but don't want to do that if possible. Then I guess I could play it ...... where?

Thank you for any help.

I don't think you can listen to non-Audible audiobooks using the Audible app. Sorry!

message 39: by Mara (new)

message 43: by Specs (new)

Specs Bunny (specsbunny) | 494 comments When i make a m4b, it is added to iTunes, I sync my phone and when it's on my phone I can play it with the Audible app (have to use the "iTunes" tab that's in the app.

I know it also can be done with mp3 but a lot of people complain that the Audible app plays them out of order. So I would go to the trouble of making the mp3's an audiobook in iTunes first.

You can use Overdrive (not the Overdrive App) on your computer to download the MP3 files. I guess you could save the files to CD's at that point.

Another approach is to import the MP3 files into iTunes, update some settings on the files in iTunes and then sync them to an iOS device where you can listen to them in iBooks (or in the Music app for older devices that don't support audiobooks in iBooks) or some third party apps such as Bookmobile. These MP3 file books don't seem to work in the Audible app as the files play out of order.

Apple seems to be moving away from supporting audiobooks saved as MP3 files so this process is a little uglier than it used to be.

Like Specs, I think the best thing to do with the MP3 files once you've downloaded them to your computer is is to convert them to an M4B file (which Apple and Audible both treat as a book), then import the M4B into iTunes, and sync it to your device. The M4B file will play in the Audible app (at 1x speed), as well as iBooks, Bookmobile, etc. I've heard there are free pacakges you can use to create M4B files, but I use Markable which you have to purchase (maybe $25?); someone else has suggested a package called AVS.

Thank you! That is very helpful! I will give it a shot then see if it is worth the extra hassle. Overdrive isn't terrible, I just don't like it that much!

message 49: by Donna (new)

Donna | 228 comments Peggy, sometimes the Overdrive App makes me crazy - I frequently want to back up 30 seconds, but when I use the button it will move me to a random place in the book; I bookmark constantly just in case but it's so annoying. Now that I've found a third party app I like (Bookmobile), I'm going to switch to always converting Overdrive books to M4Bs for iTunes just like when I rip CD's - more trouble up front but worth it to me I think.

message 50: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (tennisplayerpeggy) | 12 comments Thank you again! I will try that. I will look for a (free) app to convert from MP3 to M4B. Thanks again!
