SOLVED. Children's book about a cat made of sand [s]

My partner read this book as a child and I'd like to find it for her as a gift. Based on her age, it must be at least 25 years old, but may well be much older. A synopsis of the plot, as it's been told to me, is that a little girl makes a cat from sand while at the beach. The cat comes home with her, but she gets in trouble because he tracks sand throughout the house. To prevent her from suffering further scoldings, the cat leaves through the window. The little girl misses him and tracks him down to bring him home, where he transforms into a real (non-sand) cat.

If anyone has any leads, it's greatly appreciated.
