Hi, Meirah. Such an important and sensitive topic, so I hope that sharing about your memoir here helps in getting the word out.

Aline Tayar | 2 comments My Family and “Them Languages”: A multilingual life Aline P'nina Tayar
This is a follow-up to my first memoir 'How Shall We Sing? A Mediterranean Journey Through a Jewish Family' (Pan Macmillan/Picador) In it, I recount the experiences of my immigrant family, who happened to be those rare creatures, Jews from Malta. Settling in Australia in the 1950s as part of the country's mass subsidized migration scheme, my parents were determined to free their son and daughter from Old World perceptions based on religion, geography and class. Instead we children ended up defining ourselves by what they were not rather than what our parents hoped we would become.

Congratulations. Amazing that she wrote it at 97! Is it your mother? Grandmother? Older sister? (I looked & see that you're the editor, Sherwin.)

Thank you! She was my aunt, Maria Gluck, and she started and finished the memoir in her 90s. What amazes me most is that with just a middle school education she not only wrote it by hand, but she then dictated much of it using speech-to-text software, and then kept adding short stories, reflections, and essays, even after she turned 97. And yes, my role was editing and bringing it together into one volume so her voice could be preserved.

It’s incredible to be able to share not only her memories of pre-war village life and survival during the Holocaust, but also her perspective on family, aging, and society in the modern world. She wanted future generations to hear her voice directly — and I feel lucky to help make that possible.

That's quite a match: that she'd be able to do that, while you had the calling to become the editor.

Sherwin Gluck | 20 comments “Calling” really is the perfect word! What began as writing my father’s story for my children (Private Good Luck) grew into an obsession to share my family’s letters (Pappus), since they were their last voices and proof of their existence. And finally, fulfilling my promise to my Aunt by editing and publishing her memoir - As I Remember… - felt like the true capstone, because her reflections look back with the eye of experience, answering the question: what happened next? What moves me most is that she tells the story in her own words, offering a woman’s perspective on work, resilience, beginning again, and aging in America.

Congrats Paul on yet another book.
Love the fact its a short story.
Following up on Jan's comment regarding the cover, Im not sure how I know about Leroy Skalstad. Isnt he a well known photographer?
If this story is as frightening as it's cover, Im going to ask you for sleeping meds. :)
Wishing you much success.

Beryl | 38 comments I don’t see comment numbers. I did click on the give away link several times. The link takes me to give away that is many pages for over 1600 give aways. I used memoir filter to narrow search but it doesn’t come up then. I saw Sherwin’s other listing and when I click there it just takes me to the book listing which I already have marked as want to read.

It says not to enter until the 21st. Somebody can get a nice Rosh Hashana gift, maybe. :)

Рассказы дедушки / Tales of a Grandfather: Who Once Upon a Time Was a Grandson Himself

Hello everyone,

I’d like to introduce myself and my recently published bilingual (Russian–English) book, Tales of a Grandfather Who Once Upon a Time Was a Grandson Himself (Sandermoen Publishing, Switzerland, 2025).

It’s a collection of short stories — tender, ironic, and deeply personal — tracing the Jewish family experience across generations and continents. The narrator, a grandfather, revisits the past through memories of his ancestors and his own childhood, bridging languages, migrations, and eras.
The book celebrates cross-cultural dialogue and the endurance of family stories — how they survive exile, war, and assimilation, and still speak to new generations.

Stories remembered, retold, and passed down across generations.
For grandparents who were once grandchildren.
For those who speak English, Russian — or both.
For anyone who wants to pass on something lasting to the next generation.
For those who remember — and those who want to understand.

Available in print and digital formats (EPUB, PDF, FB2).

Warm regards,
David Lyalin

Bonnie Suchman | 15 comments "What Remains is Hope," the second novel in the "Heppenheimer Family Holocaust Saga." was published this month. My new novel follows four German Jewish cousins trying to survive in Germany and German-occupied lands during WWII. According to a review from Booklife by Publishers Weekly, "Readers will find this follow up to Suchman's prior novel, Stumbling Stones, both a heartbreaking reminder of the Holocaust's atrocities and a compelling tribute to a family's refusal to surrender to despair...Richly compelling Holocaust account, centered on the power of hope."
