message 1508: by Emily (new)

Emily Hello everyone! I'm Emily, loooong past being a teenager, and I've been teaching middle school for 15 years. I love the 8th graders that come to my class, so I try to read books that they will like to read. Thankfully I love YA, so that is not difficult. I live in GA and have been on Goodreads for a while but I haven't really participated much in any of the groups. I am hoping to participate in this group since I recently finished my EDS and my media certification. Looking forward to what seems like a fun, eccentric group. :0)

I'm a children's librarian. Before I taught elementary school, 4th and 8th grade. I was born in Ghana and raised there and here in the US. My job requires me to read everything from picture books to juvenile and young adult fiction. For personal pleasure I like mysteries but I've recently gotten into romance and fantasy(YA).

Savita Kalhan (savitakalhan) Hi I'm Savita. I love reading teen/YA lit, which is probably why I write the stuff. I practically grew up in the library, (very strict parents who didn't let us out apart from to the library!) but it gave me a huge passion for all kinds of books and genres including fantasy, dystopian, crime, thrillers...

message 1520: by K.L. (new)

K.L. Glanville (klglanville) Hello, I'm from the marvelously multi-cultural area of Southern California. I don't think I'll ever get tired of meeting people from different cultures or of trying all the restaurants with food from around the world. Of course traveling to those countries to meet people and eat new foods is even better, and I'll take any excuse I can get to visit somewhere new.

When I'm not traveling, gardening, writing or hanging out with friends I like to read, of course! My favorite older books would be ones by Tolkien, L'Engle and C.S. Lewis. Some of my more modern favorite authors are Suzanne Collins and Catherine Fisher. I really enjoy YA books…so much so that I also write them. Over the last few years I've been exploring the new terrain of being a small press author. It's been a wild ride, but well worth it.

I just recently got a Kindle and am delighted to be able to devour YA novels at a much cheaper rate now.

I'm looking forward to being a part of this group!

K.L. Glanville

Welcome Ace. I usually don't reply to new people but I'm welcoming you since you're a twin and I'm the mother of twins. Of course, my twins are adults in their thirties. I'm still fascinated by other people who are twins (or parents of twins).

message 1530: by Grace (last edited Feb 08, 2012 01:31PM) (new)

Grace (gdaminato) | 520 comments Ace wrote: "Thanks, Grace. I don't meet many other twins. Are yours identical or fraternal?

My twin and I are fraternal. We're also 'mirror twins'. I have a set of twin brothers who are four years younger than me; they're identical."

My sons are identical twins - although it was a fairly complicated procedure to establish that in the 70's, when they were born.

OMG - your Mom had TWO sets of twins. Fortunately, for her, you were born 4 years after the first set. I didn't know I was having twins until I went into labor - although I had strong suspicions for a month before. It was also an unplanned pregnancy. For the next two years I was convinced that, if I got pregnant again, I would have either triplets or quadruplets. I was so afraid of having another multiple birth.

R. C. (rcreads) | 3 comments Hi nice to meet you all~ My name is Ryina ^^

message 1532: by Grace (last edited Feb 08, 2012 02:19PM) (new)

Grace (gdaminato) | 520 comments Ace wrote: "I was born in '86 in a research hospital in Jacksonville. My mother says twins weren't that common back then, or maybe they just weren't common in Florida."

Twins weren't that common. The morning my boys were born, in 1974, the nurses on duty stayed past their shift change to be present at the birth because there hadn't been a set of twins in that hospital in so long.

My twins were my second pregnancy - I'd had a son the year before - 3 children in 13 months. Probably similar to your Mom's situation except she had to chase after two crawling babies while caring for a new-born.

The tendency to have fraternal twins is inherited - it requires two eggs to be released at the same time. As far as I know, there isn't a similar genetic factor for having identical twins since they come from a single egg and something 'happens' during gestation to create two babies instead of just one.

You're right - having twins isn't that common and multiple sets of twins is extremely rare - excluding what happens with in-vitro fertilization and other fertility treatments. The rational part of my brain told me that having another multiple birth was very unlikely. The emotional part of my brain assumed that the next pregnancy would be a multiple birth and it was just a question of whether I would follow an arithmetic progression (and have three babies) or a geometric progression (and have four). I finally quelled my irrational fears by having a tubal ligation so I would never again have to worry about getting pregnant.

Amy Howdy all! My name is Amy. I am just starting to dip my toes into YA books after only recently discovering the sheer amount of amazing sound YA fantasy and paranormal titles that are out there. Where were they all when I was actually a young adult back in the mid-90's? Ah well there's nothing to say I can't still enjoy them now so I shall lol. And I have a LOT to catch up on lol.

I'm not sure how active I'll be in the community but I just wanted to stop by and say hi. *waves*

Olivia Gorman | 1 comments Hey everyone! I'm Olivia and I just recently have joined Goodreads, and love it! Umm, i'm not the best at introductions...so i'll just list random facts about myself that no one will really care about!
1. i'm a little too social
2. I'm a freak about track and running
3. I'm obsessed with orange juice (i'm even doing a science fair project on it)
4. I'm 5'4
5. I have too many inapropriate inside jokes with my immature friends...
Hey:D

message 1543: by Pip (new)

Pip Harry (pipharry) Hello - I'm an Aussie YA writer from Sydney. I'm excited to see so many YA lovers out there :-)

message 1544: by Mia (new)

Mia (miacchiato) Hey guys! My name is Mia and I also love to read. I'm not really an avid reader and I could make so many excuses as to why I'm not, but they're just that: excuses.
5 things about me-
1. My favorite genres of music are Kpop, Classical, and Indie.
2. People tend to think I'm an overachiever/nerd but in my opinion I'm a slacker.
3. I'm moving to the beautiful island of Taiwan in August to go soul searching. [I'm half Taiwanese and I've never visited nor do I live with my Asian family.]
4. Everyone who knows me only sees one side of me. I bring smiles to peoples faces with my amiable and generous actions, but inside, I'm a lonely, depressed, teen.
5. Dancing used to be my life but now it solely revolves around about academics.

My dad is an identical twin. He and his brother were the first 2 of 5 kids. It is amazing to see how different they are because of their different adult life. My dad had health care and dental. My uncle didn't. My uncle worked hard laborious jobs, my dad didn't. My uncle looks sooooooo much older then my dad. They almost don't look the same anymore.
