I think I read this book in the 1990s, it might have been an Apple Scholastic paperback.

The characters were in middle school, possibly high school. I don't remember the age but I estimate 12-14.

I remember the main character had to sew an apron for her home economics class. She was distracted from the assignment because her favorite singer was going to give a concert at her school. I think she was coming up with schemes to meet him? Anyway, when the deadline came, she was desperate and cut out the outline of an apron from yellow fabric. The teacher remarked that she could see the purple magic marker the girl used to trace. She had to stay in the home ec classroom until she finished the apron before she could go to the concert.

The singer was sent to the home ec room to wait before he had to perform. She stuck her finger with the needle when she saw him. The two of them conversed while she sewed. When she said "oh no!" again, he thought she'd stuck her finger with the needle a second time, but she was just dismayed that she was done sewing. He dedicated a his new song to her from the stage, something about a chance meeting. (hide spoiler)]
