Children's/YA book about a girl who lives in a seaside town can communicate with animals and her grandmother tells her it's in her heritage and there's a secret society with a test to see which animals she can communicate with. On her test (it takes place in her kitchen and she stands in the middle with the animals at the compass points) she has affinity for all of them? It's a series of books (four or five?) published maybe early 2000's
