Well, I'm in. Finishing up another book and then I can really tuck into this new Poirot. I think fans will be pleasantly surprised with it. And I have it on good authority that an award winning essayist with a spanking new website will join us. A few others too. Hope you can make it.

Tina, you're forcing my hand! (Just kidding!) Give me a little time to decide on the purchase, given the fairly tepid reviews on Amazon. I may yet join in.

Pghfan, that's the thing, the reviews seem split just like the up or down vote on even just the idea of someone trying their hand at HP. Me? I happen to want Poirot to live forever. lol This is one way of making that happen.

So, one either likes the book or not. I think author was pretty successful at capturing HP's tone. And so far, a good mystery to boot. Not 100% but heck, this is her first Poirot and like an actor, a writer needs to warm up to the role.

Okay, not to twist your arm but I'd love your opine on it. Hope you get the book. ;-)

Allison please meet Pghfan. Pghfan, this is Allison. She already loves and "gets" The Parlor. She's a sister-in-crime who has been separated and now united on whodunit turf.

J-Snoops, hope you'll pop in. Just read the sample pages on Ammy to get a feel. Love the coffee house set up that opens the story.

Hey, Anastasia! Greetings! Looking forward to bringing the leetle Belgian gumshoe back. I hope the author continues the series, even with a canon of her own. With the Christie estate in approval of course.

Meantime, there's no hierarchy in The Parlor. We're all PI's, a family-in-crime. Grab a club chair, winged back, love seat, settee. Make yourself comfortable. Our virtual butler is laying a fire for our pleasure. Won't be long now. Welcome!

Thankyou for the nicest welcome I've ever had

James | 9 comments Hello, all! I'm James, the "essayist" that Tina had mentioned. LOL. The spanking new website she's referring to is my Hercule Poirot/Agatha Christie site that I finally updated with a new look. I'm the man behind the website Hercule Poirot Central.

I had known Tina and a few of you from way back when Poirot books/episodes were discussed on the old A&E board. I'm glad Tina invited me back, and I'm looking forward to discussing "The Monogram Murders"--finished it a few days ago.

Professor! So glad you made it! (Did I demote you? Hope not. lol) In honor of our fave Belgian detective, and his liberator, Ms. Hannah, we're gathering a fine group of his most loyal fans and followers.

By any chance, do you remember Snoops - J or Pghfan who hail from the old place? Well, they're here as well as Allison, Diane, Anastasia. As a bonus, the author may look in, may join us.

Anyway, we hope to get started about Sept 28th. or 29th. I love it when a plan comes together! I hope I don't disappoint!

Mystery buffs unite! If you'd like, introduce yourself with a little bio. Kinda warm things up for the discussion. Without a spoiler, include one thing you like about the new Poirot. I'll give it a try...umm, I'm a mystery buff from way back. Cut teeth on Nancy Drew and progressed to Christie mysteries. Prefer cozies over hard boiled but occasionally stray to the other sub genres and then return to cozy fare. Wrote a couple of my own whodunits and screenplay adapted them. Goal is to see my projects on the big and small screens. Official selection in film fest this coming Nov. Thing I like about the new Poirot is that the author felt the fear and did it anyway, thus giving us back our Poirot. I only hope she continues the series. Now you. ;-)

message 20: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaruff) | 241 comments Hi, I also love mysteries and I love reading. My first mystery was actually Sherlock Holmes which I came across even before I discovered Enid Blyton and Nancy Drew. This actually inspired me to become a doctor when I discovered that Sherlock Holmes was based on a doctor that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was taught by. Agatha Christie is my most favourite author but unfortunately I have read all her books several times and although they are still good to read, it is not the same as reading something for the first time, which is why I'm excited about the new book. I like most types of crime and mystery books although lean towards the cozies and the older detective novels from Christies era.

message 21: by Starfish (new)

Starfish | 13 comments Hi Anastasia, have you tried Rex Stout who wrote the Nero Wolfe novels? If you like cozies you may also give him a try.
"Nero Wolfe" and company are not only cozy, they have their own universe in a Brownstone in NYC.
Stout is an American author. The stories take place mostly in NYC from the 1930s to the 1970s.
Since Stout wrote 73 books and short stories, it will be awhile before you have to resort to pastiches. :)

Pghfan here, also from the old A&E group for many, many years and many, many discussions. It's great to have so many new and returning folk on board. I ordered the new Poirot recently and I hope it arrives soon. I'm looking forward to that discussion.

As far as other authors go, I am a fan of Christie's contemporaries' work, some of which we discussed here. Sayers, Marsh, etc. Also a fan of Nero Wolfe.

James, I checked out your site very briefly, which appears as poirot.us for me. I'll be back there if you promise to stay here and join us!

Yes, I have read most of the books. Love Nero Wolfe and his passion for orchids and good food. I have read most of the books from that era. Perry Mason is also a favourite.

Kudos, Anastasia! There's a doctor in the house! Love those docs, saving lives and doing all good things. Thanks for the bio most interesting. Yes, there's nothing like reading a brand new story...esp. when it's a good one. So glad you're here!

Unfortunately, have you noticed that the doctor is often the murderer in a lot of the older books.

Anastasia, out of frustration for always being the good guy...and gal, they rebel! But we know better. In The Parlor, we <3 doctors. ;-)

message 30: by James (new)

James | 9 comments To introduce myself, I'd like to first say that my first exposure to Agatha Christie was with the series that starred David Suchet. The year was 1989 and I watched those stories on TV with my parents. My first AC book was "Ten Little Indians"/"And Then There Were None" for school. I was hooked! My first Poirot novel was "The Big Four". Some day, I'd like to publish at least one mystery novel. I have had a vague plot hatching for 10 years now. LOL. I started writing a supernatural/mystery short story in Spanish years ago--never finished it. (Yes, I am fluent in Spanish also). As I said before, I am the creator of Hercule Poirot Central, an appreciation website for all things Agatha Christie. I was quoted recently in a NY Times article about the David Suchet in the "Poirot" series. That's a highlight in my life.

For other mysteries, I'd like to finally completely read at least one novel by Tony Hillerman. I am aiming to also read the Nero Wolfe stories.

What I like about the Poirot in "Monogram" is that he is so confident and sure of his little gray cells. He also shows that nothing is deceiving him.

It is great to see Pghfan, back from the A&E group. Strange that Tina calls me Professor instead of Inspector as I was known then.

You are off to a great lit start, mon ami! When you write that book and query agents, the NY Times nod will go a long way. Also, my one agent called me an essayist so when I titled you the same, it was prophetic. I see a continuation of great things for you, Inspector!

Because I know you wanted your cover kept secure, I thought to address you in a title of equal regard, intelligence and importance hence the Professor tag. But seeing we are amongst friends and you're secret revealed, I dare say, it is safe to return to addressing you as Inspector! (Convincing, James? No? I tried. ;-) )
