Here are some ideas for the Narrator/POV category from the GR Community. The titles in the lists/shelves are not automatically approved, but will help provide direction for you.

Narrator/POV over 60:

I also used the "Look Inside" feature at Amazon when checking specific titles.

To formulate my plan, I had a big spreadsheet. I first listed books I thought I might want to read, keeping some of the obvious categories in mind, like continent, title, and genre.

In another column, I listed all of the categories a book qualified for - most had at least 4, which *really* helped when it came making final choices. I took an extra step of marking them in columns beneath the category options and color-coded. Funny? Almost anal? Yes, but it was the visual I needed to be able to see which categories had only 1 or 2 sub-categories.

From there it was fairly easy to let my choices fall into slots. Not everything worked (I always have more books I want to read than will fit in a season), but hopefully there will be RwS tasks for those.

I had these recorded backwards in my posted plan, and now have fixed that. Thanks, Valerie, for the thanks over there, and you had me reviewing it just to make sure I hadn't slipped up.

For genre, do we use what is on the book’s Goodreads page? Some books may fit more than one ie The Good Earth could be historical fiction or classics/ Lit Fiction

Yes, GR main page genre section. If you want to lock in a genre in case it slips off, let us know. And yes, some books will qualify for more than one. I think I had a title that was listed for three!

I apologize to anyone who has relied on some aspects of my posted plan. Some category letters were changed since I made my plan and I wasn't paying attention! I have edited it so it actually conforms to the "How to Play" post.

The books may have a subtitle, but the requirements should be in the title and not the subtitle.

I’ll show my failing memory of high school English to ask this question. With the elder, child and multiple narrators, do they all need to speak in the first person or can it just be from their POV? I’ve found a book with three points of view but one character is in her own voice and the other two are in the third person.

They just need to be the POV, not first person. Some books may fit more than one sub-category for this - 3rd person and over 60, for instance.

This sounds as if it fits the multiple narrator sub-category.

Russia is a two-fer. Although the greater population is in Europe, it straddles those continents. You may count if for the one that is most useful to your plan.

1. For E6 - does the title have to start with one of those letters or any word in the title start with that letter or can the letter exist in any of the words in the title? Do sub - titles count?

7. For E5- the instructions say articles can’t be repeated but what about conjunctions? Or pronoun possessive?

For Category E, all of the requirements have to be in the title not the subtitle, except, obviously, E4 for the non-generic subtitle

E6 - The letter can appear anywhere in the title

E2 - The Number may be numerical or spelled out, but it must be a number or its plural, no ordinals or combined words, so Second and Sixpence won't work (Forty-second is OK, because Forty works)

E1 - Either first or last name - don't get too wild here, Rebekah, Washington, Village and Capital, 1800-1878 refers to a place, not a person.

Ok thanks! But just to be sure, Washington Black would work because it is actually the name of the main character, right? Does the name have to be an interactive character or can it be a name of someone not there as in Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why and I Dreamed I Married Perry Mason ? What about Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books?

E5 - We only disallowed articles in the How To thread, so your other examples would work, except, again, the title sub-categories apply only to the title, not the subtitle.

E1 - It is OK if the name in the title doesn't refer to a person in the book.

Keep in mind, these aren't like tasks. You can complete a sub-category only once, regardless of whether you repeat Pick N Mix 2.

I understand about the limit. I’m just trying to slot one in every category now and then finalize once all the other tasks are posted in case I want to switch things around. Just trying to see what all my options could be. Smile

I just listed a bunch of books I wanted to read, and I actually started with a book that has a number in the title. Most books fit in several categories, so then it was just a matter of making decisions.

This is what I did as well. I made a list of about 12-15 books that I wanted to read, then figured out which categories they each fit, then started sorting until I got to a list of 10 that matched up all the factors.

No, sorry. For Category E, all of the requirements have to be in the title not the subtitle, except, obviously, E4 for the non-generic subtitle.

Just want to be sure I have this straight for the subchallenge.

Long Day's Journey into Night by Eugene O'Neill is shelved as “Assignment” at BPL. It is also on Bloom’s Canon. Because it is on the Canon, I can use it for Pick n Mix 2. Is this correct?

With the Narrators (C) - I am specifically looking at #2 (child's), does it have to be 100% child narrator?

I'm about 40% of the book I've slotted for C2 and it is mostly child narrator but there are some chapters (albeit shorter in length) that are told from other adult characters

You should be good with that. At least 51% of the book should meet the requirement.

Yes, you can skip a letter or a number. The restriction is that you cannot use a letter or a number more than two times in a round, and you cannot reuse any specific sub-category.

Sorry to be dumb here, but after reading about locking in a genre I want to make sure I understand. So if you go to the page of the book and see the genre there on the main page, then you're good?

Yes, today. Those top ones are probably not going anywhere, and for this book you probably don't have to worry. We put that in there because the genre page can be somewhat fluid, mostly for books with fewer shelvings/ratings, and sometimes a genre will drop off the screen. We didn't want anyone to plug a book into their plan only to find when they went to claim it the genre was no longer on the page. By claiming it now, you've "locked it in" for future reading.
