This is a non-fiction book in which the author spends a year, I think, trying to do everything in her house DIY and then compares it to outsourcing or buying the same things to see which is cheaper or generally makes sense. I heard about this book a few years ago on Marketplace Money, but I cannot find it now!

The one I'm thinking of seemed to be more hands on rather than a contemplation on consumerism.
I checked the Marketplace website, and they did talk about Make the Bread, Buy the Butter on the show.
