ABANDONED. boy learns how to live in the mountains

My mom read aloud a book about an older boy who is suspected of murdering his grandfather. the town doesnt believe him so he runs away to an old cabin at the top of a mountain. his old housekeeper believe him, and one friend, her name is Jenny or Joanna or something like that i think, he learns how to hunt and trap and build a tent and a number of great skills. loved the book!

When did you have it read to you?

I think I was 10 years old or so. but it was an old book.

What year was that? It would help to know so we can narrow down the dates.

honestly I dont remember for sure, I was overseas, and we checked the book out from a private school library. it was probably 14 years ago. but it was NOT a new book. it was from an old school author. i wish i could remember. I have been wanting to find this book for years!! It was probably written in the 50's- 60's, just guessing.

My Side of the Mountain does not have the plot elements of:

1. Being accused of murdering anyone; the MC just decides to run away to the mountains.
2. A cabin. He builds a "tent" by leaning branches against a boulder, and eventually carves a cave into a tree.
3. A housekeeper
