Parley | 3 comments I read the book in the mid 90's. I remember a boy finding a {red} horse in a field and they became friends. The horse was fast and the boy trains him to race. (view spoiler)

Parley | 3 comments I don't think so. It has a fantasy "feel" to it. Geez, I wish I could remember it. I want my kids to enjoy it. :(

Was it British, American?

The Red Pony by John Steinbeck? Not sure if that matches...

Kelly Herms | 6 comments Sounds like Flame the Island Stallion, but that is a Walter Farley book. Check it out anyway, could be it.

Kirstin | 185 comments It's been awhile since I've read it so I only vaguely remember the plot but maybe Blood Red Horse by K. M. Grant. It takes place during the Crusades.

Parley | 3 comments Kelly,
I think this is it. The Island Stallion Races by Walter Farley. My local library doesn't have it, so I may have to just buy it. Seeing now that it's part of a series that I never read, I may have to go back and read them all, even if they were written for a younger audience.

Thank you all.

The Walter Farley books are wonderful -- great adventures, well-drawn characters, and of course lots of horse-y details.
