She keeps trying to convince the horse she's not this girl who abused it in the past, but it still gets angry at her until she pretends to be that girl and apologizes to it. I only remember those few details and have tried googling it without luck. I may have the girl's name wrong...?

Were there any fantasy/magical aspects in the story?
It was an audiobook my friend listened to in the car with me, so I don't know when it was published/whether it's part of a series.I think since 1990, because I believe she mentioned a computer.
