I think I remembered some more details, for the fighting competition, no one ever thinks shes going to win so when she does, she makes a lot of money because of the betting system where she would bet for herself and everyone else would bet against her. Im pretty sure her rich older friend was some sort of leader in the town or at least she had a lot of influence. The main character could have had a mother and sister but I dont think they were mentioned a lot. The books beginning is that she has some clues to help her go after her missing friend but she doesn’t know where to go or who to trust. Theres some sort of incident in the woods that scares her and theres a lot of world building that the place they live in is exclusive and that people dont believe that theres anything beyond it. Theres a wall or border around the town and its not a very big one. I remember a scene very vividly when she first starts to make money that she was embarrassed to go shopping and bathe and all and go spend money on a dress and more frivolous things since its been hard enough for most of her life to just survive. I also remember her breaking into a building near the place she works and there was some sort of weird mystical scene that gave her a magical item.
Nevermind guys I found the book! Its called “The Finisher” by David Baldacci, It’s the first novel in the Vega Jane series in case anyone was wondering.

im not sure what of this is spoilers its been so long so im sorry if anything below is
a girl in a town that you cant leave is really poor its mentioned she barely bathes or has many clothes, her friend (im thinking his name starts with q but im not sure) disappears and leaves her clues i think the plot twist was that he leaves the town somehow, anyway throughout the story she ends up going to this rich woman with influence in the town’s house and finds some magical item (i dont remember what) that allows her to fly and fight. she joins a town-wide fighting competition and ends up as one of the last two, her opponent has never lost a fight and SPOILER he is actually a monster of some sort in disguise. I think she might have a mother and sister but i dont remember for sure, if she did they were not very central characters.
