I don't like Beale's writting either, I'm like 99% sure he was pushed just to get people really mad. But if you mean trashy writing quality...Redshirts...I liked the book but even I felt the writing was really off and I read tons and tons of truly bad writing (web fiction). Joanna wrote: "I have a theory that there's magic involved. If you're curious, check out Jo Walton's reread thread. There's lots of hints in subtle places that seem to indicate that not all is as it first appears. "
I really liked the way the narrator is super unreliable and he is almost certainly lying embellishing about stuff. Also that current him isn't playing music and can't seem to use magic or refuses to use it anymore this is probably related to something tragic that occurs in the 3rd/final book which will be a good reveal. While I enjoyed almost all the current time scenes that is no excuse for how outrageously generic, boring and slow the flashback scenes were considering they were the vast majority of the plot.
Lindsay wrote: "I thought the Quantum Thief and it's sequels were excellent but I would describe the series as having a significant barrier to entry. A couple of friends of mine bounced off these pretty hard."Quantum Thief only missed being nominated by one vote. And I was going to nominate it that year, but didn't because I thought it wan't eligible. (I mixed up the US and UK publishing dates). It should have been a nominee - I've always felt bad about that.
