October 2014 Group Read Suggestions
I vote for Dark Harvest, too. I don't know how much membership overlap there may be between HA and Paced Reading Horror & Thrillers (I belong to both Goodreads groups), but, just FYI, Paced Reading Horror did The Troop as a group read in June.
Rest Area by Frank CereoBeing Halloween, scary books, killers, I think this would be a great read for this group. I have read it before and it was good.
I went out on a limb and bought the troop by John Cutter today after looking at the all the votes even if it doesn't get picked I am excited to read it this month needless to say it has my vote
Cassie wrote: "If you mean this Dark Harvest, it's amazing!"I'm seconding (or thirding) Norman Partridge's Dark Harvest, from earlier in the thread.
I had intended on finally sitting down with Partridge's Dark Harvest this month anyhow. I'm thrilled to see so many interested. That's my vote.
How about a pure classic Horror novel such as The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty, it's got thrills, spills and a spider walk. First published in 1971, being near forty five years ago now, it's well and truly earned its way into history and into the minds of generations of readers and later viewers of the film. I believe that it would be a great way to honor not only the impact which this novel has had, but also William Peter Blatty's genius by reading this book again this Halloween season.
How about John Dies at the End? Not really a straight-forward horror novel. It is a perfect blend of horror/comedy though.
I've read The Troop and The Exorcist. The Entity is a great suggestion but very difficult to find carried in a library. What about
I agree with what someone said further upstream in the thread in reply to the first question, what kind of book to read. Fall has three months, but Halloween comes but once a year. Will there be a poll as to which kind of read to do before a poll is done to pick the actual book?If we do a Halloween book, one I've seen that looks interesting is:
Gods of The Nowhere: A Novel of Halloween.
Given that he recently lost his battle with cancer, I suggest either The Tooth Fairy or The Year of the Ladybird by Graham Joyce
With so many diverse selections I was inspired......why not have our fearless moderator Jon Recluse select our October group read? He has excellent taste and would choose a wonderful book we might not discover otherwise.Just a thought!
Autumn... A time for tentacles and cosmic abominations. I nominate the Lovecraftian horrors of
Best Little Witch-House in Arkham. :-)
Brian wrote: "Bird Box by Josh Malerman is very good, and very scary to boot."Brian, Bird Box is a scary one. We read that as the group read in August. Thread is pretty active, if you want to add a note.
Christopher wrote: "What about Brian Keene's Urban Gothic, Or Maybe one of his series?"Ghost Walk would fit the theme (but that's not an official nomination since I already made one :-)
For me, the book that has it all for Halloween is Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes". Similarly, Dan Simmon's "Summer of Night" is a recent read I loved almost as much.

I would support this! thats one I havnt read yet :)
Sharon's picks (Something Wicked This Way Comes, Summer of Night) have been my favorite ideas so far. Ghost Story would've been excellent as well. I'm old school. I'm sure there's entertaining horror fiction written in the last 25 years but I'd prefer to read those last.
I recently read Dogstar. It is pretty mad. I would describe as thus: A Clockwork Orange and Trainspotting had a satanic lovechild, that lovechild was given the Quentin Tarantino treatment, oh and it is all about werewolves. I honestly thought the book was brilliant. If you want to read a truly original piece of work from a new, exciting author I would read Dogstar for sure.Dogstar
Bad Apples: Five Slices of Halloween HorrorI just finished this one and it's quick, creepy, and just right for that Halloween time read :o)

"I just finished this book. It was amazingly graphic and detailed. Cutter has a way with descriptions that few can immolate"
Just bought this one through Amazon in paperback...sounded so awesome :o)

wow!! already at 100 messages! I'm not going to suggest anything- I can't think of anything :( but I can't wait to see what wins!
Missy wrote: "I can't wait for the weather to change its been so miserably hot here (Southern CA). What about a classic like Poe or Lovecraft?"I had thought about that too.
Cassie wrote: "If you mean this Dark Harvest, it's amazing!"I like this one. it's been on my to read list for a while now.
Jarrod wrote: "I would like to suggest Halloween Man by Douglas Clegg. I haven't read this title, but have really enjoyed his other works, and the title is appropriate for the season! Plus, the boo..."lol, I bought it too!
