Beverly Gray (grayarmybrat) | 78 comments Hello, I read several different genres but my first love is historical fiction. In addition to reading historical fiction, I have also written some. I look forward to finding new authors that the rest of the group has read as well as introducing our younger members to some of my old favorites. Thanks.

PopcornReads - MkNoah (goodreadscompopcornreads) | 18 comments Hi!

I'm a total bookaholic and read almost every genre. I am drawn to historical fiction because other periods in time fascinate me. I'm always looking at how we got where we are as a species.

I'm a full-time book reviewer, with my own web site (PopcornReads.com) and it feeds my passion. If anything I read more now than I did before, which is shocking.

I'm really looking forward to being part of this group!

Mk :)

Welcome to the group Mk! I'll definitely check out your site!

Beverly Gray (grayarmybrat) | 78 comments Hi MK, I agree there is nothing like historical fiction. Welcome!

Joe (joehohmann) | 144 comments Hi, I came to this group mainly because there has been so much self-promotion on the Amazon Historical Fiction group lately. I'm a retired 70 year-old, so I have time to read 2-3 books a week. I get all of my regular and Kindle books from our 27 library system in Delaware County PA (near Philadelphia).

Joe, look around goodreads some. There are several spirited discussions about how getting e-books from the library is akin to stealing the very bread from the table of authors. Contributors come down on both sides of the coin. Its a napster thing, I guess.

One of those discussions was with Larry who must not be named. Anyone recall his last name, I'd like to follow his rants for entertainment value.

Hi Joe! Welcome! I get many of my books from the library, too!

message 315: by Beverly (new)

Beverly Gray (grayarmybrat) | 78 comments Hi Joe, welcome. I've spent many wonderful days browsing the deep shelves in the library. The important thing is that the books get read.

message 316: by Holly (new)

Holly Blankenship | 1 comments Hi I'm Holly, I wish I could write but since I can't I read. The areas of American history I am interested in is 20 century military and the political intrigue that lead up to the wars. I am also very interested in the civil war as well as the political founding of the US.

message 317: by Beverly (new)

Beverly Gray (grayarmybrat) | 78 comments Welcome Holly. My preference is U.S. military history too. That was one of my areas in my study for my degrees in History. If you haven't read it yet, you might enjoy Barbara Tuchman's GUNS OF AUGUST (events leading up to WWI).

Where is this group. The only groups on Amazon I know of are in the author's community. From your post it appears you aren't a writer. A link, perhaps?

Not that I would ever stoop to self promotion but would like to see what's going on.

message 321: by Beverly (new)

Beverly Gray (grayarmybrat) | 78 comments The moderators at the Amazon group do try to keep self promotion down. Here you go, Ken.

Jeanne (jeanne_voelker) | 52 comments I would be interested in hearing some recommendations for great stories (fiction or non-fiction) set in the U.S. Northeast and Southeast in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. It was a time of great changes.

Laura Wharton | 8 comments HI, I'm Laura S. Wharton, and I'm looking forward to sharing books with others who love historical fiction. My latest historical novel is set in 1942, and is called Leaving Lukens. Any recommendations for other "romaction" historical fiction set around WWII would be appreciated.

Cheryl | 1 comments Hi. My name is Cheryl and I am so excited to find other people who love American historical fiction as much as I do! I read books from all periods, but really like books set in the 1800s. I am a big fan of Gwen Bristow and consider her books Calico Palace and The Jubilee Trail among my favorites. If anyone can suggest books similar to these two I would love to hear about them.

Jenny Q (jenny_q) | 607 comments Mod
Hey, Cheryl! Welcome! I think we have a Gwen Bristow thread going in the Author section.

message 329: by Beverly (new)

Beverly Gray (grayarmybrat) | 78 comments Hi Cheryl, welcome. I enjoyed CALICO PALACE a great deal too! You will find lots of good ideas for new books to read with this community.

Laura White (lauradwhite) | 3 comments Hi, I'm Laura White and I just joined! I'm with the other Laura in that I also enjoy historical fiction set around WWII (my dad was a Marine in WWII). Any ideas/books/authors? Thanks!

message 331: by Laura (new)

Laura Wharton | 8 comments What a welcoming group of history lovers! I'm currently working my way through Grey Seas, a British maritime story, and a non-fiction by Kevin Duffus on the final days of Blackbeard. Both very interesting works. Mr. Duffus challenges every bit of "fiction" known about Blackbeard, countering with facts and loads of research. Both books are helping me get back in the mode to write the sequel to one of my titles set in Colonial North Carolina. www.laurawhartonbooks.com

Tracy Smith | 40 comments Hey Cheryl. I've read Gwen Bristow's Celia Garth, but that takes place in the 18th century during the Revolution.

Hi, I'm Sue and it's great to find a group that enjoys American historical fiction. I love historicals from all parts of the world but America in the late 1800s is one of my favourite eras. In fact I'm working on writing my first novel set in Wyoming 1880s.
My favourite books are Lonesome Dove, The Virginian, and 1000 White Woman and all of Nancy Turners. I'm looking forward to hearing recommendations for more great books.

Susan Spence | 22 comments Hello,
I love historical fiction, especially if there are horses involved.

When I wrote my book, A STORY OF THE WEST, I listed it under historical fiction because western seems too limiting. But that's what it is. It takes place in the west during the 1880s and is about ranching, so...

One big difference is that as a woman, I added a different perspective. Also, I hate cheesy unrealistic plots so I strove to make it real, as well historically accurate. It still has all the action though.

Camelia Skiba | 3 comments Hello everyone, and thanks for allowing me to be part of the group. I'm Camelia and instead of peanut butter jelly I prefer... historical romance on my sandwiches.

A few weeks ago I finished "Roses" by Leila Macham and loved it. The main heroine reminds me of the stubborn Scarlett O'Hara and I have to admit I didn't want to read anything for a while, just to prolong the good feeling this novel left me with.

Anyone else read this book?

hey, Camelia! Welcome! I've had Roses sitting on my shelf forever and still haven't read it. I know I really need to--people seem to love it.

message 344: by Beverly (new)

Beverly Gray (grayarmybrat) | 78 comments Hi Camelia. I haven't read it yet but it sounds enjoyable.

message 345: by Camelia (new)

Camelia Skiba | 3 comments Jenny--I had it on my shelf for over a year and never seemed to get to it (the length of it scared me, 609 pages). I regret not reading it any sooner. As a fan on GWTW, reading Roses gave me hope that somewhere other writers create similar stories.
