A couple loses their young son and the book focuses on the husband’s journey through his grief and new relationship with love after experiencing a tragedy. He meets a free-spirited woman who offers a fresh perspective on his life. He has a moment in the book very early on where he discusses the guilt of seeing his son almost die once and immediately adjusting. He calculated his lowered expenses and his new schedule. His son survived and he carried that guilt, which intensifies with his son’s death.

I feel like this book was also made into a movie. And I think I remember a blue couch on the cover of the book. I read it in 2008 or 2009.
