Though this is a personal account , rather than a history book..try mine. "The Land of Lost Content" by Sureshini Sanders on kindle/ paperback on amazon.co.uk Best wishes .

Harshini, to start with I recommend the Mahawamsa(the greatest Sri Lankan Chronicle). Then you can read Ceylon history books written by Prof.Mandis Rohanadheera, Indrakeerthi Siriweera, Dr.Paranawithana.

Go for, "A Historical Relation of the Island of Ceylon” by Robert Knox. I remember reading it as a kid and I loved it!!

Colombo by Carl Muller fictional novel on life in colombo through the ages is peppered with interesting titbits about the origins of Colombo, its colonial history and how different locations in Colombo got its names.

When Memory Dies by A.Sivanandan gives a moving account of Sri Lanka over three generations. I found it a useful background to the current civil problems.

There are 2 books written by Marie Musaeus Higgins. Those are known as "Stories from the history of Ceylon". Those books are also good. :-)
