Earth is dieing because the evil "State" is stealing the sunlight via a mirror in space. A mother daughter team works as scientists for the State and secretly try to undermine the State. The stepfather works with dog/wolf dna and implants it in the girl via nanotechnology. There is time travel to an alternative/parallel universe where the Lupin? race now live. The whole book revolves around trying to prevent a supervirus from taking over the world.
Phew.
I hope I didnt make that all up myself.

I read this book which was part of a series in the last 2 years. I think there were 2 books released to date.

The portal to the alternative world was in a sewer and was blue in colour. There was a gunfight near this location. It came out in a cave in the other world. The daughter had a fiance who ended up spying on the family and was killed by one of the dogs/wolves.

The book is Path Of The Stray by Kim Falconer and is part of her Quantum Encryption series. Phew.
