1984 question

It’s been a while since I read the book, but here’s what I think that quote means. “The connexion contained in a direct lie” implies that there is some aspect of reality that Big Brother needs to cover up with a lie. The lie, though not true, at least relates to reality insofar as it is required to “correct” it. When Winston says that most of the material he deals with has no connexion with the real world, I think he’s saying that “the real world” is actually so far removed from what the citizens have been fed that the materials he deals with are irrelevant. The Party, after all, has been deceiving the populace for decades, with lie after lie. Eventually, when one lie is about to be exposed, another lie must be created in order to maintain the charade. Therefore, after decades of new lies to cover up old lies, reality has been warped to the extent that none of the documents that Winston “fixes” are even close to being representative of how the world actually is. In other words, he isn’t forging documents in order to keep reality from being revealed to the populace, but rather from having Big Brother’s lies be revealed. Basically, the “truth” has been buried so deep and for so long that the papers Winston works with are not meant to cover up reality, but only layers upon layers of lies. My thoughts, at least! :)
