I remember that they were both involved in an accident, and the girl wakes up in hospital later having seen her friend drown. Although everybody tells her that it was just an accident, she is convinced he was taken by a monster (I think maybe his body wasn't found?) and finds a way into another world, I'm pretty sure through dreaming. She finds herself in a forest, and meets someone. Through what various people have seen, she tracks her friends progress through the world, close behind but not catching up with him. Eventually she does catch up, and there was something about a dance, but that's pretty much all I can remember.

I read it around 2016/2017 I think.

Pretty sure the main character had a boyish name, maybe Charlie or Sam?

Julia | 69 comments I want to say it sounds like The Leap by Jonathan Stroud? The girl's name is Charlie (which I didn't remember until looking up this book now!).
