"The Republic of Empathy" help

What do you guys think this short story was about? The ending threw me off a bit because it suddenly starts talking about a sentient drone! Why did the drone crash at some random person's house? I'm not sure if there's more meaning to it or not so thought of asking it here. Really enjoyed the book though!

I know you want answers, but i am not the guy to give them. The story, or rather, series of vingettes, was confusing, but also funny and insightful. Its about us in the future. Kudos for reading Lipsyte.
