SOLVED. Fiction book I read roughly 30 years ago, thriller or mystery, possibly set in Scotland, lots of guns/tactical info

Hi all,

I've been trying to remember a book I read roughly 30 years ago (so probably written in the 80s?). It's fiction and was probably a "thriller" and was, I believe, set in Scotland.

I remember that at the time, this was the author's only novel, and I remember checking book stores years later because I enjoyed the book so much, and the author had still not written anything new. I'm not sure if this is still the case.

The hero might have been ex-Special Forces or something like that. He was very skilled in weaponry and the author went into great detail about weapons and tactics. I think he was called to Scotland to help out a friend in need.

Toward the end of the book, the heroes barricade themselves in a castle (which is why I think it took place in Scotland) to face off with the bad guys.
