Part of the problem is the annotations are mainly explaining things I don’t care about: sources of Irish folk songs, intricacies of Catholicism, and such.

Yeah, it's just to give more depth to the story as it is full of surprises. But you don't have to read them to enjoy it.

It is selectively annotated (see color coding link) so you can choose which type of annotation that may help. I started with an annotated book, but the plethora of annotations interfered with being able to follow the plot.
The annotations from this source are particularly helpful in that they offer a quick explanation and an in-depth drill down if you want great detail.


Keep going I am finding Part Two a little easier to follow and some quite comic sections. Mind you I have never taken a university English course so am probably reading this at a very superficial level.
