Trying to read with annotations, getting nowhere, so a change of plan is in order: just read it through and only look up words I don’t understand.Part of the problem is the annotations are mainly explaining things I don’t care about: sources of Irish folk songs, intricacies of Catholicism, and such.

Yeah, it's just to give more depth to the story as it is full of surprises. But you don't have to read them to enjoy it.
Nice name by the way! Is Jazzy your real name too? (Mine is!)
Jazzy, Alas, my name is Mark. “Jazzy” is because I’ve almost always been a fan of Jazz; “Jake” is because that’s a nickname the men in my family get (from Jacobs).
I wish I had read Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man first. I know it's not entirely necessary to understand the first part of Ulysses but I feel like I picked up a book and only read the last quarter. Guess I will be adding it to my to be read list!
how is everyone doing with the book. Finished Part 1. Reading this book is quite a process. Physical copy in my lap and phone next to me to check references. Proteus for me was very difficult but I am in the camp of thinking it a worthwhile book and glad I am doing this. It helps that I am not working for the next three weeks.
Maybe I should look for an annotated version of this book because this is a bunch of awful nonsense!
I’m using this source: http://m.joyceproject.com/chapters/ne...It is selectively annotated (see color coding link) so you can choose which type of annotation that may help. I started with an annotated book, but the plethora of annotations interfered with being able to follow the plot.
The annotations from this source are particularly helpful in that they offer a quick explanation and an in-depth drill down if you want great detail.
I'm almost done with Part One. The sections are insanely divided. Part Two is over 700 pages, while the others are quite short. I'm reading a physical copy, listening on audiobook, and making the most of the Joyce Project resource. I have to say, without the audiobook or the online resource, I don't think I'd be reading this one. So many other books competing for my time but I'll keep going as long as I can; it's delicate reading for me, definitely not something to just breeze through. Any thoughts on how we will frame actual discussions on the book?! It's a doozy 🥴😉

Mind you I have never taken a university English course so am probably reading this at a very superficial level.
Part One discussion is officially closed. The discussion moves on to Part Two.
