RandomAnthony My dog sleeping next to me makes me happy.

Reading in the corner chair of the library lowers my blood pressure.

Walking through the woods (often with my dog) calms me.

Hearing my kids laugh makes everything worthwhile.

Treating people with kindness makes me feel like I'm doing something meaningful.

Riding my back on the Wisconsin back roads makes me feel alive.

Living near a cemetery reminds me of the importance of time.

Gardening opens my eyes to life.

Sitting in the backyard, under the gazebo, after I've cut the grass, makes me feel at home.

Sarah (songgirl7) I'm pretty sure I posted this already when this group first came into being and we were all so tired of hating things. But here they are again:

puppy kisses. coffee shops. book stores. book clubs. reading. writing. beautiful sunrises. singer/songwriters. acoustic albums. falsetto voices. blue eyes. harry connick jr. comic books. superman. chick flicks. compassion. traveling. spending rainy days home by the fire. big soft pretzels. long conversations with good friends. cheese. girls nights. cooking. pinot noir. fancy food. theatre. musicals. old movies. fluffy socks. smiling at strangers. video games. singing in the shower. singing in the car. singing on stage. dancing in my living room. my husband's hugs. roller coasters. dinner parties. champagne brunches. big cities. british accents. shoe shopping. handbags. big words. text messaging far-away friends. soul mates. laughing. getting dressed up. kid movies.

rivers
in a small canoe
a wooden paddle
playin a figue 8 till it hums

slow current pulling me downstream
golden muddy river bottom
trailing green grasses

a heron lifts itself and takes flight along the watercourse

a small mouth bass jumps in a quiet pool

and small white clouds drift in an endless blue sky reflected in the stream

so gazing down is the same as gazing up

RandomAnthony This morning I finished a slightly delayed (sorry!) mix CD for a mix CD exchange with Paul. The CD Paul sent already arrived. I suck.

I like making mix CDs. If anyone else wants a copy of what i'm sending Paul, message me...I'm not a stalker and won't show up on your door, but I like the idea of sending music out through the mail. On this disc I tried to get a good flow between some ambient/obscure material and more straightforward material a little (or a lot) below the mainstream. I'll be happy to throw more copies in the mail. I'm not telling you who's on it, as that would ruin the surprise, but Boards of Canada are playing right now. There's your hint.

I love the U.S. Mail! Seriously.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

i love mixed tapes-seriously and am musically a neophyte
i listen to it
and love it
but never could remember which songs were which bands except the most obvious
so i depend on others to shape me musically

i'll send you an email-i'd love one! thanks

King... I'm with you on that one. My favorite place to go used to be Loch Laven, just above the birth waters of the American River in the Sierra and just below Devil's Postpile and the bottom entrance to Desolation Wilderness. You could only get to it by hiking in, and I can't carry a pack anymore, so I haven't been in many years. But I miss being out that far in wilderness so much. No roads, no humans, no sounds other than that made by wild creatures and weather. Crystal clear cold glacial lakes. Granite boulder escarpments. A fire, some friends, whatever we dragged out there to eat... I miss those times.

Now I content myself with a hike through Bear Valley out at Pt. Reyes. On a week day there's hardly anyone out there. You can walk 4 miles to the Pacific through redwood forest and marshes... see an albino deer if you are lucky... stand on a high rocky arch over the water and watch sea lions play. Now that is a tiny slice of heaven.

message 7: by Paul (new)

Paul Bryant Oh yes - I really like swapping music and one thing the internet is good for is just that, reaching out from one obscure part of one continent to an obscure part of another continent. My cd mix for yours any time, too! Some people are a little nervous of contacts they make on the internet but if you're a music fan the internet will get you everything you ever wanted and more. Some guy in California who's a fellow John Fahey fan turned out also to be a Brian Wilson fan and sent me his complete Smile bootleg stuff, which was a lot. Wowee, that was Christmas in July. One example amongst many.

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Sigh. In 8th grade a boy made a mix tape for me and I thought it was the most romantic thing ever. I wore that thing out. It was all love songs but not cheesy mushy ones. It had, like, U2 and Guns & Roses. No Phil Collins or anything. Heh.

I'm impressed by all you nature lovers. I'm a total princess. For me, roughing it means no room service. I don't enjoy nature beyond, like, taking a walk to the local park. I don't like bugs or dirt or sleeping on the ground or squatting behind a tree. I do know how to gut a fish, though.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Sarah,

I used to work for a company that does river trips in places like scotland and portugal that are "Inn to Inn." They do the more rugged wilderness ones too but the Inn to Inns are for people who want to enjoy the experience of being outdoors in beautiful settings during the day and dine at a nice pub/rest at night and sleep in a nice bed and breakfast every evening. In Scotland it includes a whiskey distillery tour and music at the pub in the evening and in Portugal vineyard tours etc. roughin it luxe :)

and crackers with butter make me happy

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Now that sounds like a vacation I could enjoy, Maureen. Provided the daytime outdoor part doesn't include a lot of bugs or birds or anything with wings, really.

message 12: by Kristjan (last edited Mar 12, 2008 02:29PM) (new)

Kristjan (booktroll) My family makes me happy ... wife just called ... she was driving the kids up to the indoor soccer game and the 3 year old is saying some really off the wall stuff and my 9 year old and 12 year old start to argue with her. My wife keeps telling them to "Relax guys, Tori is only 3 years old" the whole trip.

After the game they start home ... the 3 year old starts up again and my 9 year takes the bait. My 3 year old then says "Relax Riki, I'm only 3 years old." My 12 year old nearly chokes on her water and my wife almost drove off the road. It was a clasic moment.

message 13: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) That is precious.

My friend's 3-year-old has listened to the Seussical cast recording one too many times. She was being scolded for something and she retorted, "But Mama, a person's a person no matter how small!"

message 14: by Paul (new)

Paul Bryant Hey Donald, message me your address, I have my own favourite RT songs already gathered together on 2 cds right here on my shelf so it'll be like a ten minute job. Easy! Anyone else?

Donald... I'm shocked, shocked I tell you that you advocate child slavery. You child hater.

message 16: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony Whoo. Your "I Love" post is great, Donald. I'm with you start to finish. My kids don't smell like hound dogs, though. Our dog is straight up Chicago street mutt. And my kids are younger than yours.

I love falling asleep on the couch. I don't know why. I just love it.

message 17: by J (new)

J Your posts are all so beautiful I've forgotten what I was going to say.

message 18: by J (new)

J I'm decidedly unhappy at the moment so I'm forcing myself to post something here. So. Happiness...

Walking in the woods, exploring new places, revisiting old places, Planters Deluxe mixed nuts, a good book on the porch swing, being read to, singing along with a favorite song, fine sable watercolor brushes, mechanical pencils, used book shops, you get the idea...

message 19: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 14, 2008 02:06PM) (new)

bakin a cake with my grandchildren for my 27 year old daughter
smells cakey in my house
frosting and sprinkles in 40 minutes
full belly before supper and sweet guilt...
thanks j for bringing back the happy thread
don't worry be happy

memories of a maine blizzard and driving to the hospital at midnight and a blue morning delivery with the sun coming up at 5:00 to the city blanketed in snow and a million diamonds sparkling from the rooftops and a tiny baby sleeping in my arms

message 20: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony J! I hope the party with your daughter raises you into the happiness zone. I'm sure she's going to have a ball, and she's lucky to have you as a mom.:)

However...my damn mechanical pencils ALWAYS run out of lead. It's a problem. What's your secret?

message 21: by Valerie (new)

Valerie I love the smell of fresh tar. It stirs up my inner seven-year-old and makes me want to break out a pair of roller skates or a skateboard.

message 22: by Valerie (new)

Valerie No, we didn't get stuck (neither did the cars)... it just had that smell for days, and the new tar was so smooth to glide around on.

We didn't eat it, though.

message 23: by J (new)

J What sweetness, Maureen.

And thank you for the kind words, Anthony. The running out of lead happens to be my favorite part. Sliding that tiny lead into the pencil I feel like a surgeon. It gives me a secret little thrill. Weirdness, I know.

I grew up on a back road in the country. I used to roller skate to my best friend's house and the tar would bubble up from the heat in the summer. It was impossible to resist skating over those tar bubbles. Yeah, the wheels got all gummed up. But it was so so worth it.

RandomAnthony I like the fact the librarians in my town know me by name. I like that the show is melting. I like the fact my youngest son wants to go to the zoo with me tomorrow. I like the fact I changed all the burnt out light bulbs this morning and the house seems brighter than before. I like candles. For some reason I can light a candle and my blood pressure drops and I feel better with the world. Classical music, too. This morning was Beethoven and some Mozart arias, followed by the library. Not a bad day.
