rivers
in a small canoe
a wooden paddle
playin a figue 8 till it hums
slow current pulling me downstream
golden muddy river bottom
trailing green grasses
a heron lifts itself and takes flight along the watercourse
a small mouth bass jumps in a quiet pool
and small white clouds drift in an endless blue sky reflected in the stream
so gazing down is the same as gazing up

I like making mix CDs. If anyone else wants a copy of what i'm sending Paul, message me...I'm not a stalker and won't show up on your door, but I like the idea of sending music out through the mail. On this disc I tried to get a good flow between some ambient/obscure material and more straightforward material a little (or a lot) below the mainstream. I'll be happy to throw more copies in the mail. I'm not telling you who's on it, as that would ruin the surprise, but Boards of Canada are playing right now. There's your hint.
I love the U.S. Mail! Seriously.
i love mixed tapes-seriously and am musically a neophyte
i listen to it
and love it
but never could remember which songs were which bands except the most obvious
so i depend on others to shape me musically
i'll send you an email-i'd love one! thanks

King... I'm with you on that one. My favorite place to go used to be Loch Laven, just above the birth waters of the American River in the Sierra and just below Devil's Postpile and the bottom entrance to Desolation Wilderness. You could only get to it by hiking in, and I can't carry a pack anymore, so I haven't been in many years. But I miss being out that far in wilderness so much. No roads, no humans, no sounds other than that made by wild creatures and weather. Crystal clear cold glacial lakes. Granite boulder escarpments. A fire, some friends, whatever we dragged out there to eat... I miss those times.
Now I content myself with a hike through Bear Valley out at Pt. Reyes. On a week day there's hardly anyone out there. You can walk 4 miles to the Pacific through redwood forest and marshes... see an albino deer if you are lucky... stand on a high rocky arch over the water and watch sea lions play. Now that is a tiny slice of heaven.

I'm impressed by all you nature lovers. I'm a total princess. For me, roughing it means no room service. I don't enjoy nature beyond, like, taking a walk to the local park. I don't like bugs or dirt or sleeping on the ground or squatting behind a tree. I do know how to gut a fish, though.
Hi Sarah,
I used to work for a company that does river trips in places like scotland and portugal that are "Inn to Inn." They do the more rugged wilderness ones too but the Inn to Inns are for people who want to enjoy the experience of being outdoors in beautiful settings during the day and dine at a nice pub/rest at night and sleep in a nice bed and breakfast every evening. In Scotland it includes a whiskey distillery tour and music at the pub in the evening and in Portugal vineyard tours etc. roughin it luxe :)
and crackers with butter make me happy

mix CDs give me a bog ole happy... and right now I'm listening to one that Paul sent me, the delightful British sweetheart that he is. It's AWESOME PAUL!!!! I'm totally dancing around my studio. : D

After the game they start home ... the 3 year old starts up again and my 9 year takes the bait. My 3 year old then says "Relax Riki, I'm only 3 years old." My 12 year old nearly chokes on her water and my wife almost drove off the road. It was a clasic moment.

My friend's 3-year-old has listened to the Seussical cast recording one too many times. She was being scolded for something and she retorted, "But Mama, a person's a person no matter how small!"

I love falling asleep on the couch. I don't know why. I just love it.

Walking in the woods, exploring new places, revisiting old places, Planters Deluxe mixed nuts, a good book on the porch swing, being read to, singing along with a favorite song, fine sable watercolor brushes, mechanical pencils, used book shops, you get the idea...
bakin a cake with my grandchildren for my 27 year old daughter
smells cakey in my house
frosting and sprinkles in 40 minutes
full belly before supper and sweet guilt...
thanks j for bringing back the happy thread
don't worry be happy
memories of a maine blizzard and driving to the hospital at midnight and a blue morning delivery with the sun coming up at 5:00 to the city blanketed in snow and a million diamonds sparkling from the rooftops and a tiny baby sleeping in my arms

However...my damn mechanical pencils ALWAYS run out of lead. It's a problem. What's your secret?

We didn't eat it, though.

And thank you for the kind words, Anthony. The running out of lead happens to be my favorite part. Sliding that tiny lead into the pencil I feel like a surgeon. It gives me a secret little thrill. Weirdness, I know.
I grew up on a back road in the country. I used to roller skate to my best friend's house and the tar would bubble up from the heat in the summer. It was impossible to resist skating over those tar bubbles. Yeah, the wheels got all gummed up. But it was so so worth it.
i read your other post J-your daughter and mine share the same birthday!
too cool
my youngest son just called
he's driving thro Jacksonville FL heading to Panama City to see his wife and two children
he's been working in georgia and they've been apart for 2 weeks

Reading in the corner chair of the library lowers my blood pressure.
Walking through the woods (often with my dog) calms me.
Hearing my kids laugh makes everything worthwhile.
Treating people with kindness makes me feel like I'm doing something meaningful.
Riding my back on the Wisconsin back roads makes me feel alive.
Living near a cemetery reminds me of the importance of time.
Gardening opens my eyes to life.
Sitting in the backyard, under the gazebo, after I've cut the grass, makes me feel at home.
